2 New York Police Officer Executed As Retaliation Over Killing Of Black Man Eric Garner

Must read

Tensions have been high since the police killing of Eric Garner.  The animosity toward the New York Police Department has never been higher.  That tension increased as a man shot two police officers execution style as retaliation for the killing of Garner and 18-year old Michael Brown.

One officer was killed and another is in critical condition after both were shot while inside a patrol car.  The attack occurred in Brooklyn around 3 pm on Saturday.   According to The New York Post, both officers were shot in the head at point-blank range.

“It’s an execution,” one source told The Post.

A second source says that the man just started “pumping bullets” into the car.

After the shooting, the man ran into a nearby train station, where he was shot and killed.  Currently, it’s not reported whether the man killed himself or was shot by the police.

The tension is related to the Grand Jury’s decision not to indict the officers who choked and killed Garner on video.  The president of the police officers union, Patrick Lynch, and Mayor Bill de Blasio are battling publicly over the treatment of officers after the decision.   Lynch has even petitioned that the mayor not attend funerals of fallen officers if they are killed on-duty.

This is the first time an NYPD officer has been killed on-duty since December 2011.  In contrast, the NYPD has a very long history of killing unarmed black men.   In most of these cases, the officers are never indicted or convicted of their crimes.

However, the act of killing an officer is often met with a very harsh penalty.  The man who killed the officer in 2011, Lamont Pride, was convicted of murder and sentenced in 2013 to 45 years to life in prison.

The alleged shooter in the latest incident, who has not yet been identified, left some clues of his motive on social media.  Before the incident occurred, he stated on Facebook that “I’m putting wings on pigs today.  They take 1 of ours, let’s take 2 of theirs….#ShootThePolice.  #RIPEricGarner #RIPMikeBrown. This may be my final post.  I’m putting pigs in A Blanket.”

Dr Boyce Watkins from Your Black World, says that the retaliation is unfortunate and painful to watch.  He also says that it was inevitable that someone was going to take action against officers for things they’ve done to the black community.

“I hated to hear about these officers being shot, this is not the optimal solution,” says Dr Watkins. “But it’s hard to imagine any group of people where you can kill them without accountability and not expect someone to retaliate.  The Garner and Brown incidents were like 9/11 for many black people, and if you’ll recall, the US government killed a lot of people after 9/11, some of them innocent.”

Watkins says that the best way to protect good officers is to ensure that bad ones are prosecuted.  He also says that the state must take efforts to help the healing process.

“It’s extremely rare for a grand jury to return without an indictment, clearly signaling that black male life is worth less than the life of a police officer.  When officers are killed, someone goes to prison for a very long time,” he said.  “In contrast, everyone saw Garner get killed on video, and to exonerate an officer who killed a black man in broad daylight is a huge slap in the face.  Most people wouldn’t try to hurt a police officer for any reason, but a lot of people are hurt and frustrated by seeing black men killed for virtually no reason.  Someone is probably going to see this as an act of war.”
