NAN – A Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, on Friday sentenced one Kunle Ajayi, 22, to two years’ imprisonment for stealing two ladies bags and a phone valued at N120,000.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Ipaye Nwachukwu, said that the convict’s sentence would start counting from the day he was arrested.
Ajayi was arrested in January 2014 on a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.
He had pleaded guilty to the charges and urged the court for leniency.
The prosecutor, Insp. Peter Nwangwu, had told the court that the accused committed the offence at the Faculty of Science, University of Lagos, Akoka in Yaba, Lagos State, on Jan 28, 2014.
He said the security men caught the accused and one other who was at large with two ladies’ handbags and a Nokia Phone.
“When the accused was interrogated, he could not explain how he got the bags and the phone.
“He said it was his friend that asked him to pick up the bags from one of the classrooms where they were writing exams.
“It was while they were discussing that the security men saw them but the second accused ran away,” he said.
The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 285 (1) and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
