The Presidential Election held last year has left many young people in the U.S. feeling more disconnected from the election process than ever before. Many young people view American politics as a system that is controlled by and serves the interest of big money, rather than the American people.

In 2012, voting rates for 18-24 year olds declined by over 50%, supporting the fact that many millennials feel they are disconnected from politics. With a new president in office, it’s never been more important for young people to get involved with politics.

Political Groups at College

As a student, whether you’re majoring in politics, studying for a politics-related degree or even taking your online master of music in music education degree, college is one of the best places to start if you’re hoping to become more involved. Many colleges offer political societies, groups, and clubs that you can join to meet like-minded people and work together to make the political changes that you need. Going to college is one of the best ways for young people to make connections and discover organizations that you wouldn’t have been able to otherwise.

Volunteer Work

At college, networking is key to meeting the right people who can help you to become more involved in politics as a student, and perhaps even pursue a future career in politics should you wish to. Building your networking skills whilst you are studying at college is important, not only for your involvement in politics, but for success in various careers that you may choose for the future. Building good networking skills can be easier than you think!

Get Fundraising Experience

If you can see yourself running for office in the future and your ultimate life goal is to run and win a political campaign of your own, getting fundraising experience whilst at college can be very beneficial for you. As a student, there will be plenty of resources available to you for raising money for charities, college groups, and more. Getting involved in fundraising at college not only looks great on your resume, it can be great practice for your future political career and an awesome way to network with great people.
