Cholera Outbreak Claims 20 Lives In Ebonyi

Ebonyi state Director of Public Health and Disease Control, Dr. Chris Achi on Friday, April 17, 2015 reveals that seven Local Government areas namely; Izzi, Ebonyi, Abakaliki, Ohaozara, Ebonyi, Ohaukwu, Ishielu and Ezza North Local Government Areas has been affected with Cholera.

Not less than 20 people have been reported to have died of the cholera epidemic throughout these seven local government areas.

Dr. Achi told news men that 10 undergraduates from the Ebonyi state University were affected by the disease and have been reported dead.

“Nine others and 15 other students of Girls’ High School, Azuiyiokwu, who were affected were taken to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki for medical attention” he said.

He further explained that the disease which has proven deadly was first encountered at 12 Apostle College Sharon and Annunciation Schools, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Kpirikpiri,  Abakaliki.

Achi disclosed that those afffected had resorted to self-medication which lead to renal breakdown before they could be rushed to the hospital for medical care.

He warned that inhabitants of Ebonyi state should refrain from drinking contaminated water, passing faeces without discretion around their residential vicinities and to make sure they eat only meals well prepared by them or meals which they are very sure of how it was prepared so as to avoid more fatalities.
