Tragic Friday: One Dead, 5 Seriously Injured As Drainage Collapses In Benin City

Must read

A drainage under construction by the Edo State Government has claimed one life, leaving five others seriously injured in Benin City. The drainage is expected to link 2nd East and 3rd East Circular Road in Benin City.

The drainage collapsed on Friday, May 6, 2016 when the six persons were working underground when they were swallowed by the falling sand.

An eye-witness told our reporter, “We saw them working when they caved in and were covered with the sand. We tried to rescue them. We dug for several hours before we could rescue five persons out of the six”.

He said by the time the sixth person, Mr. Moses Okhakho, was located and efforts made to bring him out, he had passed on. According to him, he went deeper than others, stressing that it was only his four fingers that were seen at first.

The elder brother to the deceased, Mr. Gabriel Okhakho, described the incident as unfortunate, saying the drainage construction was a dead trap.

“I was called upon to come here after being informed of what happened. I rushed down only for me to be told my younger brother, Moses, is dead. We are just two left. Now I am the only one left”, he cried out.
