WEEEDS GARDENING GARDEN FLOWER WEEDS

[dropcap]G[/dropcap]ardening enthusiasts know how relaxing and pleasant this activity can be and they often turn it into more than a simple hobby. However, there is something that minimizes the joy of harvesting a beautiful garden and that is the nasty weeds. More often than not, no matter how hard you try to get rid of them, they manage to come out stringer and bigger and in cases like this, you need some effective methods to kill them and keep your garden weed-free.

In short terms, there are two ways in which you can remove weeds and that is either naturally or by using quality weed killers. Both show results although the action time might differ as well as the lasting time of the effect. However, the most commonly used are herbicides that act faster and last l§3onger so people use them on large crops and surfaces of soil. Before picking a weed killer, you need to know there are different types that act in different ways and their success depends on how well it meets your needs.

  • The contact weed killer must be applied to the foliage in order to allow it to get into contact with the weed. The best time to apply it is during growing season and rest assured because it doesn’t affect the surroundings. The most popular product is Roundup, one of the fastest working herbicides that attacks the leaf and stem so it won’t reach non-targeted plants through the soil. It’s based on glyphosate that isn’t dangerous for pets and kids either so they can even play in the treated area after the product has dried
  • The selective killer is a smart substance that somehow knows which type of weed to trigger and remove. It’s often used in lawns because it removes weeds with a wide leaf and it doesn’t damage the narrow leaf of grass. You can find many products on the market that can help you maintain your lawn in perfect condition and remove the unwanted weeds. Roundup also provides a selective product so you can enjoy its efficiency on your front porch.
  • The third type is called systemic weed killer and it’s a type that affects weeds from foliage to root so the results are highly visible. However, it takes more time to act because the effect is deeper so you need to be patient. The results can be seen between 7 days and 4 weeks, depending on how fast the weeds grow, how advanced is the growing process, and the climate conditions.
  • The last type is the residual that can be used on any type of weed and it biggest advantage is that it leaves a film on the soil to prevent new weeds from appearing for 3 to 12 months. Ortho GroundClear Vegetation Killer is a reliable product that can prevent weeds from reappearing for up to 1 year after being applied. It’s fast acting and you can see the results within an hour so you can use it on driveways, alleys, around fences, or near sidewalks where weeds are hard to remove by hand.

Many people go the old-fashion way and try organic weed killers because they want to keep their garden eco-friendly. Although not as effective in a short time as the store-bought weed killers, the organic ones are an excellent alternative if you are not a fan of chemicals. The biggest advantage is the low cost as you can use items you might have at home or in your own garden.

  • One of the safest ways to kill weed is to create a mixture of vinegar, salt and dish soap and spray it over the affected area. Vinegar is known to be naturally acid so it will instantly attack the weeds. Be careful when using it around your garden beds because it could also affect your crops.
  • Salt can act as a weed killer on its own if you spray it on the sides of your lawn or in between the cracks of your pavement. It will kill weeds but, at the same time, it will leave the soil barren and you won’t be able to plant something on it ever again.
  • Suffocating the weeds is an excellent and environmentally-friendly idea because as any other plant, they love sunlight. All you have to do is cover the soil with newspapers that are biodegradable, by the way, and put some mulch over them to keep them in place. If stubborn weeds make their way through the newspapers and mulch, simply add another layer until they can no longer get to the surface.
  • Scalding is another safe and effective form of killing weeds and it can be done very easily using boiling water. You simply pour the hot water over the weeds, especially in hard-to-reach areas like around fences or in between cement cracks. Be careful not to burn your feet or hands and avoid reaching garden beds because the water could damage them as well.
