This weekend, Funke Usman Street in the Elegushi Lekki area of Lagos witnessed some chaos over a land dispute which sent a 28-year old fisherman, Ayaba Basil, father of 2 children, to an early grave after an alleged stray bullet hit him.
According to a Punch report, “Basil was killed last week Wednesday, when our correspondent visited the place on Saturday (September 20, 2014), many of the residents had fled in fear that the suspected land grabbers might be planning to unleash more violence”.
Basil’s elder brother, Abel revealed that after the sad incident, Basil’s wife and children were taken to Ikorodu where they are staying with a relative.
According to him, late Basil is from Badagry but had lived in Lekki all his life and had been a fisherman in the area. He added that Basil had come home from work on the fateful Wednesday and lay down only to hear noise emanating from outside .Eager to find out what the problem was he went out only to be hit by a stray bullet behind his neck which resulted in an instant death.
The violence believed to have been caused by a land dispute left one man shot and several others wounded. It was also learnt that the area has been deserted by residents who are scared of their lives.
They were said to be currently staying in an uncompleted building in an undisclosed street. They pleaded for government’s quick intervention to allay insecurity and restore a peaceful environment.
Furthermore, the Ilasan Police Division, Jakande, Lekki alerted about the violence and on getting to the scene,the hoodlums escaped but some were arrested.
However, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, assured that enough security has been set up in the area to curtail further chaos adding that investigations are ongoing.
