Measles, Whooping Cough Kill 6 Children In Jigawa

No fewer than six children under the age of 5 years old have been killed in Maizare village,  Suletankarkar Local Government Area of Jigawa State following an outbreak of measles and whooping cough.

Maisare has been described as the worst hit out of six villages which were affected by the recent outbreak.

The Head of Department for Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), Mohammed Maisamari confirmed the outbreak of the two diseases to Daily Trust on Sunday, March 13, 2016.

He said: “Maizare is the only village amongst the villages that recorded the death of six children. So far 249 under-five children have been treated as a result of contracting measles or whopping cough in six of the affected villages. In Maizare, 139 children have been treated, in Lula 24, in Dadin Duniya 26, Mallam Kadir 10, in Suletankarkar and Fulanin Danladi 25 children have been treated in each of the villages.”

Maisamari further stated that measures have been taken to nip the disease in the bud.
