Spirit and Life Devotional: God’s Love Is Conditional

Must read

Spirit and Life Devotional is a daily publication by Pastor Chinaemerem Ibezim, senior pastor of Able Ministers Chapel, a church based in Calabar, Cross River State.

“Those who accept my commandments and obey them are the ones who love me. And because they love me, my Father will love them. And I will love them and reveal myself to each of them.” – John 14:21 NLT

There are two aspects of God’s love which we experience. There’s His unconditional love for the sinner. In other words, He will save anyone from sin irrespective of what he’s done. Now, God is not going to love the sinner; He has already loved the sinner. In the Bible, “loved” is usually used in relation to sin: for instance, “God so loved the world”, “not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins.” 1 John 4:10. “Loved” is used because it refers to God’s act of sending His Son to die for us. So God has already loved us, in that sense.

Now, Jesus, without mincing words said, “Those who accept my commandments and obey them are the ones who love me. And because they love me, my Father will love them. And I will love them and reveal myself to each of them.” He said, “All who love me will do what I say. My Father will love them, and we will come and make our home with each of them.” John 14:21‭, ‬23

From the words of Jesus, it’s clear that if any man will enjoy the love of God, that person will have to live in obedience to His will. We can’t be living in disobedience and believe that everything is fine! 1 John 3:24 says, “Those who obey God’s commandments remain in fellowship with him, and he with them.” Brothers and sisters, we always have a role to play. Jude 21 says, “Keep yourselves safe in God’s love, as you wait for the Lord Jesus Christ in his mercy to give you eternal life.”

And really, His commandment is simple: that “we must believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and love one another.” 1 John 3:11 & 23. Amen.
