You Need To See This: 5 Fun Facts About Sleep

Must read

1. Women need more sleep than men

When it comes to the battle of the sexes, women are winners. According to sleep expert Jim Horne, ladies need an extra 20 minutes of sleep. “Women tend to multi-task – they do lots at once and are flexible – and so they use more of their actual brain than men do,” revealed Horne earlier this year. “Because of that, their sleep need is greater.” The next time your beau is snoring the night away, tell him to pipe it down. You deserve your beauty sleep!

2. Coldplay: “Most sleep-inducing band”

Tossing and turning each night? Then you may want to consider taking some advice from the Brits and downloading some Coldplay. A survey of 6,000 British adults conducted by Travelodge found that the rockers are more likely to help them fall asleep. For a “sleepy soundtrack,” many also turn to Alicia Keys, Mozart, and Taylor Swift to tune out and shut down.

3. Sleep: Hollywood’s fountain of youth

Ever dream of having actress Penelope Cruz’s gorgeous glow? Try getting some rest… lots of it! It’s been reported that the Spanish siren gets up to 14 hours of sleep to prevent dark circles. Even fellow starlet Jennifer Lopez swears that eight hours of sleep is her secret to looking and feeling youthful. “Sleep is my weapon,” says Lopez. “I think what works best is sleep, water and a good cleanser.” Take that, botox!

4. Sleep prevents hangovers

Many people attempt to seduce the sandman with a glass of wine, but watch out, sipping on alcohol can lead to an embarrassing situation you won’t ever want to dream about. According to the National Sleep Research Project, “after five nights of partial sleep deprivation, three drinks will have the same effect on your body as six would when you’ve slept enough.” Also, don’t overdo it on the champagne as alcohol causes dehydration, which also prevents sleep.

5. Smell the flowers for better sleep

Everyone knows the phrase, “wake up and smell the coffee,” but what should you do when hitting the sack is in order? Gather some flowers for a real power nap. Back in 2007, the Science journal first reported that those exposed to the aroma of roses while studying and again during sleep improved their memory. However, feeling rested every day is enough to improve one’s mental state, so for some added relaxation, sniff on the soothing scents of lavender or jasmine for a peaceful evening.
