Boko Haram Kills Chief Iman Of Gwoza, Councillor, Children As 10,000 Borno Residents Displaced

Must read

The on-going military operations recently launched to recapture Gwoza town and surrounding villages in Borno State has led to the displacement of about 10,000 residents who have fled to neighbouring Adamawa State and Cameroun.

The incessant terrorist attacks on innocent and hapless people in the communities led to the seizure of the town and its villages by the Boko Haram insurgents where they had hoisted their flag as a sign of having conquered the territory.

But the military last week launched a counter-offensive to uproot the insurgents, resulting in thousands who did not want to get caught in the crossfire fleeing their homes.

A report from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and local officials said many of the displaced persons were still trapped on hilltops and stranded without food or water.

Speaking in a telephone chat with reporters yesterday, the North-east Zonal Coordinator of (NEMA), Malam Mohammad Kanar, confirmed that many people in their thousands had been displaced by the attack of suspected Boko Haram members.

“I can confirm to you that over 10,000 displaced Gwoza residents have fled to neighbouring Adamawa State and Cameroun.

“As I speak to you, hundreds are on their way to Madagali in Adamawa State and some parts of Cameroun. We are now working assiduously in conjunction with the neighbouring state to assist the fleeing residents.

“Some parts of Gwoza, especially behind the rocky mountain that borders Cameroun, have been taken over by Boko Haram, who sacked the residents and hoisted their flags,” Kanar said.

Also, Chairman of Madagali Local Government Area in Adamawa State, Mr. James Abawu Watharda, said: “Gwoza residents have continued to troop into the state and for now over 7,000 have since arrived. The local council is making arrangement to come to their aid.

“We are therefore, calling on NEMA and other relevant authorities to assist, because the scope of their needs is beyond the local government council.”

Also in a telephone interview, a fleeing resident Ahmad Musa claimed to have witnessed the massacre of residents by the Boko Haram, revealing that the terrorists killed both adults and children.

Musa said the Chief Imam of Gwoza was attacked in his house and killed right before members of his family who later took to their heels.

The insurgents were also said to have slit the throat of a serving councillor, Hon. Saleh, of Kuranabasa Ward, as well as his three children.

Mallam Adamu, who said he managed to escape Gwoza to Adamawa, added that soldiers and fleeing residents that were still trapped on top of Gwoza hills had no access to food or water. He said he saw many corpses littering the streets of the town as he fled.
