A suicide bomber disguised in school uniform set off a bomb that killed at least 48 people including students of the Government Technical Science College, Potiskum in Yobe State, Monday, November 10, 2014.
According to survivors and mortuary attendants, at least 48 people were killed at the school assembly, as over 2,000 students and teaching staff were waiting for the principal’s address at around 7.30 am. A mortuary attendant confirmed the ages of the victims to be tween 11-years-old and 20-years -old.
The explosion left a gruesome scene with body parts and blood scattered around the school assembly hall. Soldiers rushed to scene of the tragic terrorist attack but they were chased away with stones by people who were angry at the military’s inability to check the Islamist insurgency which has rocked the North Eastern states of Nigeria.
A survivor who did not wish to be identified, spoke with newsmen saying that people are not happy with military’s unwillingness to bring an end to these terrorist attacks. He also revealed that the bomber hid the explosives in a popular school bag.
”These soldiers know who is Boko Haram and who is an ordinary citizen,” he said. “Why have they not finished with these heartless criminals after so many years?”
“We were waiting for the principal to address us, around 7:30 a.m., when we heard a deafening sound and I was blown off my feet, people started screaming and running, I saw blood all over my body,” 17-year-old student and survivor Musa Ibrahim Yahaya told newsmen at the general hospital where he is being treated with head wounds.
Hospital staff say that dozens of people are being treated with some being serious and may require amputations.
Potiskum also suffered a bomb attack at an ATM in First Bank last week. These increased attacks attributed to terrorist group, Boko Haram come even as a cease fire announced between the government and the terrorists has been revealed to be a fraud perpetuated with the help of the president of Chad, General Idris Deby.
