Eight children between 18 months and 15 years old were in the early hours of Friday, December 19, 2014 reportedly stabbed to death in their home in Manoora, Cairns, Australia.

While seven of the victims are believed to be the children of a 34-year-old woman, the eighth child is believed to be one of her relatives, according to Queensland police.

The woman is said to be currently in a stable condition in a hospital where she is receiving treatment for the injuries she sustained.

The victim’s older brother aged 20 had allegedly returned home to behold the sight of  his murdered siblings.

According to Independent UK, the mass murder was not believed to be terrorism-related but comes just days after a siege in Sydney which left two people and the gunman dead.

Lamenting the gruesome murder, Australia’s prime minister, Tony Abbott, in a statement said the “heartbreaking” crime has thrown Australia into national mourning.

He said, “The news out of Cairns is heartbreaking. All parents would feel a gut-wrenching sadness at what has happened.

“This is an unspeakable crime. These are trying days for our country.”

“Tonight there will be tears and prayers across our country for these children.”

According to the police they were called to the home in the Cairns suburb of Manoora on Friday morning after receiving a report of a woman with serious injuries and on getting to the scene, they saw the corpses of eight children.

Detective Inspector Bruno Asnicar declined to say how the children died.

He said, “As it stands at the moment, there’s no need for the public to be concerned about this other than the fact that it’s a tragic, tragic event.

“The situation is well controlled at the moment.

“There shouldn’t be any concern for anyone else out of this environment.”

Meanwhile, Asnicar disclosed that investigations into the crime has fully commenced.

A cousin to the injured 34-year old woman, Lisa Thaiday, said the older brother to the victims needed comfort.

“I’m going to see him now, he needs comforting.

“We’re a big family… I just can’t believe it. We just found out (about) those poor babies.”
