On Monday August 18, 2014 the vigilance of Lagos Airport security personnel saved the country from what would have been a lethal suicide bomb attack at Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos.

The Trent was at the scene of the incident and spoke exclusively with the security agencies at the Lagos airport.

According to security personnel on duty on the morning of Monday, August 18, 2014, around 5.30 am they noticed a disabled man loitering around the office complex of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency annex office, which is opposite the cathedral at the airport. The officer who spotted the man approached him and asked him who he was looking for, the disabled man whom police have now said is 22-years, told him he was waiting for his friends.

At that point, the officer decided to put him under surveillance and alerted the entire security team on duty.

At about 7.30, the suspect received a phone call and the security team overhead him saying in Hausa, “I have reached the airport, but I cannot find the International airport.”

Soon after receiving the phone call, the suspect walked into the short bush and took of all his clothing and was completely naked, and picked up a device similar to a suicide bomb and proceeded to tie the device around his waist.

That was when the security personnel swooped in and arrested the 22-year-old from Kano.

The Brains and Braces guards, who spotted, monitored, and arrested the alleged suicide bomber, alerted Airport Authority Security who alerted the police to the apprehension of the suspect. The police responded swiftly and arrived the scene and took the suspect away.

When the suspect was arrested, he keep on saying, “Allah sent me, Allah sent me.” At the police station, the suspect told the police officers upon interrogation that, “Allah sent me to kill infidels in Lagos.”

Police sources reveal that the suspect refused to reveal any more information upon his arrest except his declaration on who sent him and his mission.

However, later in the day the suspect revealed that he was 22 years old and that his father was from Kano and his mother was a Cameroonian. He also revealed that he lived in Nasarawa Quarters in Kano and that he was part of a terrorist cell targeted at bombing the Lagos international airport, Apapa, and Lagos Island.

ThisDay reports that a senior security official with one of the aviation agencies revealed that initial inquiries exposed that the suspect was from Niger Republic and he arrived Lagos on Sunday, August 18, 2014 and was asking people for the location of the airport.

Photos and videos of these events have been exclusively released to The Trent by security operatives.
