Former communications minister, Major General Abubakar Tanko Ayuba (retd) has died at the age of 71.

Ayuba, who represented Kebbi South constituency in the national assembly in 2007, died in the afternoon of Wednesday, May 25, 2016 at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LUTH).

Although the sickness that led to his death was not immediately disclosed, it was learnt that he had been at a private ward at the hospital for about two months.

The former senator was appointed governor of Kaduna State in August 1990 under the military regime of General Ibrahim Babangida.

He was elected senator for the Kebbi South constituency under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in April 2007.

The deceased senator received the Nelson Mandela gold award for his excellent leadership and contributions to society in September 2008.
