Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, the governor of Ondo State, has threatened to sanction any traditional ruler in the state found wanting on the issues of cultism, chieftaincy tussles, and illegal settlers.

While reading the riot act during a statewide broadcast on Thursday, May 6, 2021, the Governor disclosed that he would not hesitate to take action against any traditional ruler giving outlands to unknown persons without reverting to the state government.

Akeredolu, who spoke on the issue of illegal herders in the forest reserves and the crisis in Owo and Ikare-Akoko in which over nine persons were killed and several others injured, warned that any traditional ruler that is found unable to contain activities of cultists in his domain would be sanctioned according to the law.

four persons were killed in Ikare-Akoko over chieftaincy tussle rocking the ancient town in the last few days.

Also, six people lost their lives in Owo following a violent clash between cultists and members of the Odua People’s Congress, OPC, in Owo.

According to Akeredolu, he will not hesitate to impose 24- hour curfew on any community where there is a crisis.

The Governor also admonished those with illegal firearms in the state to submit them to the security agencies as the government had mandated the security agencies to prosecute any person found with such weapons.
