Journalist Beaten And Killed For Facebook Post On Popular Football Player (VIDEO)

Must read

A journalist in Azerbaijan who had posted critical comments about a popular soccer player on Facebook has died after an attack by the player’s fans.

Several suspects have been detained in connection with the beating of Rasim Aliyev, who had written that Javid Huseynov, who plays for Azerbaijan’s national team, should be banned from European soccer for allegedly gesturing crudely toward a Cypriot journalist who had asked why he had waved a Turkish flat at a Cypriot team’s fans.

Aliyuv, a reporter for the ann.az  news site, was lured to a meeting by a person claiming to be a relative of the player, local media and the BBC report. Speaking from his hospital bed, he said Saturday that he was beaten by relatives of Huseynov, who took his wallet and phone. His sister said he died a day later of internal bleeding and injuries.

Aliyev had accused Huseynov of being “immoral and ill-bred” for the gesture, which he made after a Europa League qualifying tie between his club, Gabala FK, and Apollon Limassol. “I do not want someone this amoral, impertinent and unable to control himself to represent me on European soccer fields,” Aliyev wrote.

Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev said he was “seriously concerned,” calling the incident a “threat to freedom of speech,” according to Baku-based APA news agency, and vowing a full investigation.

Several men were arrested Monday, including Javid Huseynov’s cousin, Elshan Ismayiolov, the APA news agency reported.
