Must read

“The federal government is doing everything possible to secure the release of the Chibok girls and put an end to the horrible saga of their abduction,” a new statement by the information minister, Lai Mohammed says.

Reacting to the latest video of some of the girls, via a press statement e-mailed to The Trent, Mr. Lai Mohammed on Sunday, August 14, 2016 said it is “in touch with those purportedly behind the video”.

”We are on top of the situation. But we are being extremely careful because the situation has been compounded by the split in the leadership of Boko Haram. We are also being guided by the need to ensure the safety of the girls,” the statement signed by a media aide of the minister, Segun Adeyemi said.

”Since this is not the first time we have been contacted over the issue, we want to be doubly sure that those we are in touch with are who they claim to be,” he said.

Alhaji Mohammed expressed the hope that the latest development will signal the beginning of the end of the nightmare to which the girls, their families and indeed all Nigerians have been subjected since the unfortunate abduction.

Boko Haram, the dreaded Islamist terrorist group, has released a new video showing at least 50 school-age girls which the video says are Chibok schoolgirls kidnapped from their school in April 2014.

The girls are seen wearing hijabs that cover their full bodies with a Boko Haram fighter as moderator and interviewer. The militant restates the terrorists’ demands for the exchange of their detained fighters for the release of the Chibok schoolgirls.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Army has reacted to the video which shows 50 school-age girls – purportedly from Chibok – by declaring a Ahmad Saldika, a journalist and two others wanted for “have links to Boko Haram”.

According to a statement e-mailed to The Trent by  Colonel Sani Usman, spokesperson for the Nigerian Army, the trio have been declared wanted because they are in possession of information on the conditions and the exact location of schoolgirls kidnapped by Boko Haram from Government Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State, in 2014.
