2023: Political Idealism That Will Annoy You, Then Heal You! [MUST READ]

[dropcap]F[/dropcap]irst published in my column, #TheAlternative, in today’s ThisDay.

Last week, I wrote about cold hard facts, in a piece titled ‘2023 Political Realities That Will Annoy and Heal’. It went very viral and major stakeholders in the Nigerian project reached out to me and asked me to also x-ray the other end of the political spectrum-political idealism.

Let me make a full disclosure here: I do not believe in zoning. It is not democratic. It does not allow for the best candidate. It creates a sense of entitlement, and it breeds resentment.

However, Nigeria must choose and practice a style of governance best suited to her. We cannot adopt a foreign model (the Presidential and Parliamentary models were both foreign and applied on Nigeria with little or no changes). Rather, we ought to adapt a model that has worked elsewhere.

Adopting and adapting are two very different ideas. When you adopt (as Nigeria has done), you take on a model and force yourself to fit into it. And that type of mentality can be very frustrating, because in politics, one side can never fit all.

But when you adapt, you take on a model and make changes to that model, until it suits your specific needs. It is like inheriting clothes from your older siblings, and taking them to the tailor to land adjustments until those clothes fit you.

Tanzania adapted the Presidential system of government to suit its needs. Instead of two or many strong parties, they have only one dominant party, the Chama Cha Mapinduzi, which has produced every single President since 1980. It may not look as democratic as the West wants, but it works for them, and Tanzania has never had a coup or an interruption in its chosen model of democracy.

So, if Nigeria wants to adapt her democracy and make zoning an unwritten rule, much like The United Kingdom’s unwritten constitution, then I am all for it.

However, if Nigeria is to go with zoning, then the Presidency should be micro-zoned to only those zones that have not tasted power or have barely tasted it. And that means that if we must zone, then power should be zoned to the Southeast. That zone has only ever tasted power for six months, between January 15, 1966 and July 29, 1966, when Major General Aguiyi-Ironsi held sway as the first military head of state of Nigeria.

Nnamdi Azikiwe was a ceremonial President with absolutely no political power. He was a figure head, while Sir Abubakar Tafawa-Balewa wielded power, albeit remote controlled from Kaduna, by Sir Ahmadu Bello.

If, however, both major political parties feel that they cannot zone the office of the Presidency to the Southeast, due to reasons bordering on realpolitik, then they should not zone to any other Southern geopolitical zone.

We either go with justice, equity, and fairness, or we go with full blown democracy. But we cannot go with both.

There is no point asking one party to zone its Presidential ticket to one region, and having the other leave its own open, or even worse, to zone it to another region. The only way zoning can work is if BOTH major parties zone their tickets to the same geopolitical zone.

In truth, Zoning is a tactical and stop gap measure towards ensuring the survival of Nigeria as a nation. It is a sacrifice of the majority to those ethnic nationalities who may not have their numbers.

And we need not fear the Cameroon treatment, where power rotated to the South from the North, and Paul Biya refused to release it, because as 2015 proved, the regions that concede power have the numerical strength to retake it.

If I were to make a case for zoning, and remember, I myself am a minority, I would say it is a vehicle that we can use to buy time and temporarily avert the appointment Nigeria has with disintegration. Anyone with a vested interest in the survival of Nigeria as a corporate entity had better pray power rotates to all regions in due course, whether by zoning or by turn by turn.

Due to no fault of whoever succeeds buhari the economy is going to get worse and could even collapse by 2025. Not to be a doomsday prophet, but the implication of that is that we are very likely to see an escalation of the presently unbearable socio-political-economic upheavals.

Nigeria is actually not far from the Congo scenario. The utility of a Nigerian President or Vice President of South East origin is the feel good effect it will have on that zone and with minority ethnicities, which could lead to a temporarily stabilising potential. And with that stability comes the opportunity to fix the almost irreversible damage Buhari has done to Nigeria.

The opposite of this scenario will be the case were threats to Nigeria’s corporate existence continue to escalate.

With the Presidential primaries of both political parties less than a month away, it is probably too late to crystallise zoning, especially as powerful Northern APC members have bought the ?100 million Presidential nomination form (nobody spends that much money in order to withdraw). But even if both parties can’t zone the Presidency, they should at least consider zoning the Vice Presidency.

Having said the above, it is also pertinent to speak some home truths to those geopolitical zones agitating for zoning. Too often, they are too inflammable online and offline. Stooping to conquer is not a strategy they believe in, and sadly, they do not command the forces to acquire power by the direct route.

Such people must collectively understand that bravery without strategy is a futility. And when you do not even agree within yourselves, how do you hope to agree with your rivals in the contest for power? It is hard to acquire power, and therefore you must plan for the acquisition long before elections are imminent. But is that what some of our friends have done?

Leave your shops and markets during voter registration, and go home to register, even if you will lose small money for those few days when you don’t trade. Don’t leave your apprentice there. Carry him too and register him, because others are registering their people en masse. Then concentrate your votes, so your region commands the same voting power as others. That is the ONLY route to power!

When you scatter your votes all over the place, you reduce your effectiveness.

These geopolitical zones agitating for power via zoning actually have the population they need to make their case. But their voting power is diluted because about 40-50% of it is cast in other regions where they trade, making it ineffectual. When you have such scattered votes, political parties start to see you as only good for achieving the needed 25% to secure geographic spread. It should not be that way, but that is the reality of politics. You work with reality until you can change it.

And sadly, nobody can tell some of these zones the truth. If they do, they will gather to insult that person and his or her lineage. So, people just leave them. And then when all is said and done and a new government is inaugurated, they start shouting ‘marginalisation’!

You need a clear sense of purpose or you will be blown about by every shiny thing. Without clarity, you will invest in anything instead of the right thing. Without focus, you will weaken your resolve by pursuing too many birds and end up catching none.

And especially in Southern Nigeria, we must stop allowing religion divide us or we will remain eternally subjugated to the North. We must realise that most people on Earth did not choose their religion. We were mostly taught what to believe. We largely inherited our religion!

If your parents were Northern Nigerian Muslims, you would have been a Muslim. If they were Igbo Roman Catholics, that is what you would have been. If Yoruba Anglicans, then voila!

It was the British government that determined most of the religious backgrounds of people in Southern Nigeria. They deliberately gave permits to Catholic missionaries to go to only certain parts, and then gave Church of England missionaries permits to go to other parts, while giving Methodists permits for other parts.

They deliberately forbade any missionaries from crossing into the North, because they wanted the North and South to be divided by religion, so they will both fight each other, rather than the colonialists.

The only place where their schemes failed was in the ancient Bini empire, because Bini culture was too advanced to accept an imposed religion. Thus, Western style Christianity failed to take root in Benin. And that was the real reason why they destroyed Benin in 1897.

This they did to make it easy for them to divide the native populations and politically dominate us, while they economically exploit our resources.

So let us stop thinking our religion makes us better than an atheist or adherents of others religions. Christ did not die to put religion into our lives. Religion was already present in our lives before Christ was born. The Pharisees were uber religious. What Christ came to bring was faith-the WiFi that connects us to God.

And when we in the South continue to allow religion and region divide us, we will continue to be subservient to those who are United by region and religion.

Policeman Kills Man He Suspects To Be His Wife’s Lover Before Killing Himself

An NYPD cop trailed his wife and her young lover to an upstate hotel — then fatally shot the man before killing himself in a love triangle that turned deadly, police sources told The Post on Monday, May 9, 2022.

Enraged, jealous cop Sean Armstead, 36, was supposed to be working a midnight shift in the Bronx but called in sick to hunt down his wife, Alexandra Vanderheyden, 35, and her 20-year-old dog-walking beau, Edward Wilkins, on Sunday, sources said.

The bloody saga unfolded after the illicit lovebirds drove separately toward their meeting spot — a La Quinta Inn in Wallkill — around 3:45 p.m. Sunday, sources said.

Vanderheyden, who employed Wilkins in her dog-walking business, decided to ditch her car down the road before reaching the hotel, and her lover picked her up — because she was wary that her hubby might be on to them and wanted to throw him off if he came looking for her, sources said.

The pair stayed at the hotel for several hours before heading out to a local Golden Corral restaurant for dinner, sources said. They then headed to a Dave & Busters in the area, sources said.

Shortly after 10:45 p.m., the couple left the entertainment site and headed back to their hotel, sources said. Figuring it was safe by then for Vanderheyden to retrieve her car — given her cop husband had to be at work soon — Wilkins dropped her off at her vehicle, and they began to drive separately back to the hotel to rendezvous again.

But Armstead was on their tail — with Vanderheyden later telling investigators she believes that her husband tracked her through her cellphone, sources said.

The cuckolded hubby chased down Wilkins as both drove on NY-211, crashing his vehicle into his love rival’s car and spinning it around on the state highway, witnesses and sources said. Both cars eventually came to rest facing east in the roadway’s westbound lanes, they said.

Wilkins then jumped out of his car and ran for his life, authorities said.

He got as far as the parking lot of a nearby Buffalo Wild Wings, where he was shot in the back of the head in a volley of 16 bullets fired by Armstead, officials said.

The veteran cop then turned the gun on himself and committed suicide, according to the sources.

Vanderheyden, who had been following in her car, drove up to see her husband and lover each lying in a pool of blood on the pavement, the sources said.

The blood could still be seen outside the restaurant Monday morning.

“It happened outside,” a Buffalo Wild Wings manager told The Post. “The night manager told me she kept everyone inside and locked the doors.”

In a statement on Monday,  May 9, 2022, Vanderheyden’s family called the murder-suicide “a devastating tragedy for the victims and families involved.

“Our family has been directly impacted by the traumatic events that occurred late on May 8,” Joe Meyer, Vanderheyden’s brother, said in the statement.

“We’re awaiting the outcome of the law enforcement investigation to determine exactly what happened,” Meyer said. “We ask the members of the media to respect the privacy of the families and victims involved in this tragic event and to allow law enforcement to effectively investigate.”

Wilkins’ family declined to comment on the incident Monday. Armstead’s kin were unable to be reached.

Sources said Wilkins was working at Vanderheyden’s dog-walking business when the two became romantically involved.

They said Vanderheyden and Armstead’s 9-year-old marriage had hit a rough spot at some point and that the cop had grown suspicious of the affair.

In a statement released on Monday, May 9, 2022, the Wallkill Police Department said both men were pronounced dead at the scene.

Armstead was appointed to the NYPD in July 2011 and worked in PSA 8, which patrols NYCHA developments in a section of the Bronx.

  1. Alexandra Vanderheyden and her alleged lover, Edward Wilkins, check into the La Quinta hotel in Wallkill around 3:45 p.m. Sunday with Vanderheyden parking her car elsewhere, out of sight. The pair then goes to a Golden Corral restaurant in the area for dinner and later to a local Dave & Busters. Shortly after 10:45 p.m., Vanderheyden believes her husband, NYPD Officer Sean Armstead, is on his way to a midnight shift and has Wilkins drive her to her car.
  2. Cuckolded husband Armstead, who began tailing the couple, chases down Wilkins and crashes into his car, ending with both vehicles facing east on NY-211 in the westbound lanes.
  3. Wilkins flees from his car and into the Buffalo Wild Wings parking lot. Armstead fires off 16 rounds, striking Wilkins in the back of the head. He reloads and shoots himself in the head. Vanderheyden, who had been following Wilkins on her way back to the hotel, comes upon the scene and sees both bodies.

He had five complaints filed against him in three separate incidents in 2013 and 2014, but none were substantiated, according to NYPD and Civilian Complaint Review Board records.

There are no records of departmental discipline due to the complaints, which were for excessive force, discourtesy, and abuse of authority.

Back in 2016, Armstead was assaulted and robbed of his wallet — containing his NYPD identification card — while walking his dog in Harlem, according to police sources.

Wallkill cops said several agencies are involved in the murder-suicide investigation.

‘It will take decades for Ukraine to be accepted into EU’ – President Macron

It will take decades for Ukraine to be accepted into the European Union, France’s Emmanuel Macron has said.

In a speech to the EU’s parliament in Strasbourg, he instead suggested Ukraine could join a “parallel European community” while it awaited a decision.

This would allow non-EU members to join Europe’s security architecture in other ways, said President Macron.

His words came as fierce fighting continued in the eastern Donbas region, where Russia is trying to make gains.

A senior US defence official characterised the Russian advance as “single-digit kilometre kind of progress”. A Ukrainian leader in the Luhansk region said serious battles were taking place.

Ukraine began the process of applying to join the EU in February this year, four days after Russia’s invasion.

“We all know perfectly well that the process to allow [Ukraine] to join would take several years indeed, probably several decades,” Mr Macron said.

He added: “That is the truth, unless we decide to lower the standards for accession. And rethink the unity of our Europe.”

Mr Macron said a “parallel European community” should be considered instead, rather than suspending the EU’s strict membership criteria to fast-track Ukraine’s application.

He said it would be “a way of anchoring countries which are geographically in Europe and share our values”.

His comments came shortly after European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the EU’s executive would be publishing its initial opinion on Ukraine’s bid for membership in June.

Kyiv officials confirmed on Monday, May 9, 2022, that Ukraine had submitted the second part of its EU membership application to Brussels.

It normally takes years for countries to negotiate EU membership, with candidates having to prove that they meet multiple criteria – from respecting democracy and the rule of law to having a robust enough economy.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has suggested the EU use a special procedure to grant Ukraine immediate membership of the bloc, but this has not happened.

Later on Monday, the French president made his first foreign visit since re-election to Berlin, for talks with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on the EU’s response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Speaking at a press conference before the meeting, Mr Scholz said Russia’s war of aggression had made co-operation between Paris and Berlin even more important.

“This is something that shocks us but also welds us together because we must act together,” he said. “It cannot be the case that borders in Europe can be moved around with violence.”

The EU is trying to agree a sixth package of sanctions on Russia, including a phased ban on imports of oil, with longer delays for some landlocked states in Central Europe.

However, Hungary has refused to back the oil embargo, describing it as an “atomic bomb” for its economy. Ms von der Leyen travelled to Budapest on Monday, May 9, 2022, in an attempt to resolve the deadlock.

After talks she said that “we made progress, but further work is needed”.

For Better Sex, 8 Tips No Couple Should Go Without

0

Push the reset button on your sex life

If you’re coupled and stuck in a sexual rut, you’re not alone. While dry spells are a normal part of any relationship, it’s still no consolation for couples experiencing one. “Familiarity is the death of the sex drive,” Allison Moon author of “Girl Sex 101” told Healthline. “The more we get used to someone, the less exciting sex becomes.”

Here are some quick tips — some of which I’ve tried — to help reignite passion if your sex life is lacking.

1. Liberate your body’s energy in a new way

“Go dancing or try yoga,” says Moon. “Once you affirm your connection with your own body, you can affirm your connection with your partner’s body.” One survey found that coupled but sexually inactive people were prone to feelings of sadness and felt unattractive. Reclaim your sexual power by finding new ways to move and get comfortable in your body.

2. Reignite your dopamine with a fresh experience

“Doing something new creates a sense of bonding and intimacy. Think outside of the box and do an activity that might scare you or excite you, like an amusement park ride or an escape room,” advises Sunny Megatron, sex educator and co-host of the American Sex Podcast. “You will create dopamine and duplicate the same feelings you had in the honeymoon phase of your relationship.”

Experts say dopamine and other chemicals in the brain are directly linked to physical attraction and romantic passion, which is why bonding over a new activity together could help spark arousal.

3. Schedule a sex “fact-finding” night

“Take one night to have a raw discussion about what you do and don’t like sexually, explore new sex moves, and talk about your hidden fantasies,” Megatron told Healthline. “Don’t pressure yourself to be sexy, just experiment to see what you like and say what you normally avoid saying out of fear of embarrassing yourself or sounding insensitive.”

A 2016 online research survey on 1,200 men and women ages 18-25 showed that men and women have wildly different sexual expectations. These expectations are unlikely to change overnight, so couples must communicate their likes and dislikes in bed in order to have a mutually pleasurable experience.

4. Take a sex class and use your weekend to practice

“Taking a couples’ sex class can open up a whole new avenue of sex play,” says Megatron. Finding a one-night sex class is as easy as hopping on Eventbrite or Facebook. Couples can learn about new sex positions, techniques, and toys and props for sex play, in a learning environment that is fun — not intimidating.

When I took a bondage class with my partner, the sex educator was welcoming and made us feel comfortable. I recommend it to any couple that wants to have fun while learning new tricks.

5. Go on a sexy overnight getaway (or not)

“Go away to experiment with [a] little role-play. Make up backstories for your characters ahead of time, dress up, and have fun with it,” says Megatron. The U.S. Travel Association even reports that couples that travel together have better sex lives.

But, some couples working their way back to intimacy may find a sexy rendezvous challenging. “Going on a romantic getaway can create too much pressure to perform,” says Moon. “You will benefit even if you spend time together in ways that are nonsexual. Go hiking together or visit a new local spot.”

6. Get cozy and chill with an erotic movie

“Get to know each other’s experience of titillation,” says Moon. “There is porn that is couple-friendly.” For porn sites that offer female-friendly, queer-friendly, and couple-friendly alternatives, Moon suggests Sssh, Crashpadseries, and FrolicMe.

For couples that want to take a walk on the wild side, Megatron suggests attending a weekend sex convention. “There are sex conventions year-round in almost every city. They offer sex classes and you can observe sex play without participating. Reserve those ideas for when you get home later.” Sex conventions are listed on social sites including FetLife and Kasidie.

7. Pleasure yourself in front of your partner

“Masturbating allows your partner to see you enjoy pleasure, which can build intimacy,” says Moon. Allowing your partner to witness how and where you like to be touched is practicing a level of vulnerability that encourages closeness. Masturbation also has numerous health benefits, including improving your mood and relieving pent-up stress, which is a great primer for more sex.

For adventurous couples, Megatron has a more daring suggestion. “Wear a remote-control sex toy on your date and let your partner hold the remote control. Use it as a form of extended foreplay to put your libidos in overdrive before you reach home.”

8. Have a one-to-one talk to air out seeded stress

Lack of communication is often what leads to sex droughts in a relationship. According to the Guardian, a recent survey found that couples who argued frequently were 10 times happier than those that avoided conflict. “Practice having hard conversations,” says Moon. “Fostering intimacy can often be as simple as having a conversation you have been avoiding.”

Don’t get discouraged by what your partner says. Just remember that discovering what’s wrong in your relationship is part of making an effort to improve it. “There are solutions if you are willing to compromise,” says Megatron. “Even if you are sexually mismatched, you can get creative and fix those inequities.”

If nothing else works, tap into your inner needs

Stress and the busyness of life are other factors that affect sexual intimacy, but there are fruitful ways to overcome setbacks. “Sometimes you just need to tap into something simple to get back on track, but many people let fear or embarrassment stop them from trying,” says Megatron.

Ukraine Destroys Putin’s Parade Boat With Laser-guided Bomb

Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, returned to the presidential palace on Monday

Ukraine says it may have destroyed a special boat used by Vladimir Putin to inspect his naval fleets.

Dramatic footage from Sunday shows a white-coloured Raptor-class patrol vessel hit by a laser-guided bomb.

It was dropped from a Bayraktar TB2 drone near Snake Island, in the Black Sea – where a border guard was filmed saying ‘Go f**k yourself’ to the Moskva warship before it was sunk by Ukrainian missiles.

Putin has used such a boat with the 001 designations for fleet inspections in Sevastopol and St Petersburg.

The Russian president is believed to have started the war with eight of these patrol vessels but may be down to three as his armed forces take heavy losses.

The Ukraine Now Telegram channel reported: ‘We received information that one of the destroyed boats of the Raptor type in the Snake Island area was Putin’s parade boat.’

The Ukrainian Air force is still alive- seen here are two Ukrainian Su-27 striking Russian facilities on the famous Snake Island in the Black Sea, in remarkable footage filmed by a TB-2 drone. As we can observe, there is serious damage.

It said the Kremlin leader’s vessel is distinguished by its white coloured hull and the tail number 001.

Raptors typically have a camouflage pattern rather than white – as shown by a second clip showing another Ukrainian strike on one of these boats.

Ukraine also claims to have destroyed a helicopter loaded with paratroopers over Snake Island.

The 100-acre outpost is seen as strategic because of its location to whichever country controls it, allowing them to claim a slice of the western Black Sea.

Almost one month after the sinking of the Moskva in these waters, Moscow has not disclosed the true death toll from the warship.

Sex Tape: 4 Chrisland School Teachers Arraigned Over Dubai Trip Scandal

The Lagos State Police Command on Tuesday arraigned four teachers of Chrisland School at the Yaba Magistrate Court over sexual misconduct by five pupils of the school during an international trip.

Those brought to the court were the staff who accompanied the pupils to Dubai, UAE, for World School Games, a four-day annual competition with schools from all over the world.

They are Oladotun Sotunde, Elesho Tajudeen, Rhoda Olanipekun and Ajiboye Hammed.

The teachers are facing charges pertaining to alleged conspiracy and conduct likely to cause a breach of public peace.

After the sex video of the affected pupils went viral on social media, the Lagos State Government announced the closure of all the branches of the school in the state.

However, the government directed the reopening of the schools a week later following a review of the administrative investigation into the incident.

Lyon Defender, Marcelo Sacked For Farting In Dressing Room And Laughing About It

0
Lyon Defender Marcelo

Lyon’s decision to sack their veteran centre back Marcelo last season was in part due to him FARTING in the dressing room and laughing about it with his teammates, it has been revealed.

A new report in L’Equipe has lifted the lid on a chaotic last few years at Lyon, both on and off the pitch, explaining some remarkable details of their downfall.

One of the most bizarre situations is that of Brazilian defender Marcelo, who was mysteriously kicked out of the first-team in August 2021, before leaving the club under a cloud just a few months later.

It has now been reported that his exit was sparked by his flatulence in the dressing room – and the ensuing laughter with team-mates – which riled the hierarchy during a difficult period for the club on the pitch.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The specific incident occurred following a 3-0 defeat away at Angers – a team Lyon will have expected to beat – in which Marcelo scored an own goal.

At the time, manager Peter Bosz had only been at the helm for a few months, while sporting director Juninho was growing tired with the squad – which ultimately led to his exit in the winter break less than five months later.

It was initially reported that Marcelo had been removed from the first team due to a ‘dressing-room incident’, but further details were not divulged at the time.

After the 34-year-old left the club in January of this year, he joined Bordeaux, where he is currently embroiled in a relegation battle as the end of the season approaches.

As it stands, the club are rock bottom of Ligue 1, four points from safety with just two matches remaining of the campaign.

Marcelo has started the last three games for the struggling side, all of which ended in defeat.

At Lyon, meanwhile, the struggles have continued and they look set to miss out on European football amid a season that L’Equipe claim ‘should have been filmed’, such is the drama of the storyline.

The club were docked a point for fan violence in the stands, while there has been failed recruitment, a coach under pressure, Juninho’s mid-season exit, and the departure of two main shareholders.

10 Exercises To Tone Every Inch Of Your Body

0
exercise

Benefits of working out

We know daily exercise is good for optimizing health. But with so many options and limitless information available, it’s easy to get overwhelmed with what works. But not to worry. We’ve got your back (and body)!

Check out the 10 exercises you can do for ultimate fitness. Combine them into a routine for a workout that’s simple but powerful and sure to keep you in shape for the rest of your life.

After 30 days — although you can also do them just twice a week — you should see improvements in your muscular strength, endurance, and balance.

Plus, notice a difference in how your clothes fit — winning!

Why these 10 exercises will rock your body

One surefire way to attack your fitness regimen effectively? Keep the fuss to a minimum and stick with the basics.

1. Lunges

Challenging your balance is an essential part of a well-rounded exercise routine. Lunges do just that, promoting functional movement while also increasing strength in your legs and glutes.

  1. Start by standing with your feet shoulder-width apart and arms down at your sides.
  2. Take a step forward with your right leg and bend your right knee as you do so, stopping when your thigh is parallel to the ground. Ensure that your right knee doesn’t extend past your right foot.
  3. Push up off your right foot and return to the starting position. Repeat with your left leg. This is one rep.
  4. Complete 3 sets of 10 reps.

2. Pushups

Drop and give me 20! Pushups are one of the most basic yet effective bodyweight moves you can perform because of the number of muscles that are recruited to perform them.

  1. Start in a plank position. Your core should be tight, shoulders pulled down and back, and your neck neutral.
  2. Bend your elbows and begin to lower your body down to the floor. When your chest grazes it, extend your elbows and return to the start. Focus on keeping your elbows close to your body during the movement.
  3. Complete 3 sets of as many reps as possible.

If you can’t quite perform a standard pushup with good form, drop down to a modified stance on your knees — you’ll still reap many of the benefits from this exercise while building strength.

3. Squats

Squats increase lower body and core strength, as well as flexibility in your lower back and hips. Because they engage some of the largest muscles in the body, they also pack a major punch in terms of calories burned.

  1. Start by standing straight, with your feet slightly wider than shoulder-width apart, and your arms at your sides.
  2. Brace your core and, keeping your chest and chin up, push your hips back and bend your knees as if you’re going to sit in a chair.
  3. Ensuring your knees don’t bow inward or outward, drop down until your thighs are parallel to the ground, bringing your arms out in front of you in a comfortable position. Pause for 1 second, then extend your legs and return to the starting position.
  4. Complete 3 sets of 20 reps.

4. Standing overhead dumbbell presses

Compound exercises, which utilize multiple joints and muscles, are perfect for busy bees as they work several parts of your body at once. A standing overhead press isn’t only one of the best exercises you can do for your shoulders, but it also engages your upper back and core.

Equipment: 10-pound dumbbells

  1. Pick a light set of dumbbells — we recommend 10 pounds to start — and start by standing, either with your feet shoulder-width apart or staggered. Move the weights overhead so your upper arms are parallel to the floor.
  2. Bracing your core, begin to push up until your arms are fully extended above your head. Keep your head and neck stationary.
  3. After a brief pause, bend your elbows and lower the weight back down until your triceps muscle is parallel to the floor again.
  4. Complete 3 sets of 12 reps.

5. Dumbbell rows

Not only will these make your back look killer in that dress, but dumbbell rows are also another compound exercise that strengthens multiple muscles in your upper body. Choose a moderate-weight dumbbell and ensure that you’re squeezing at the top of the movement.

Equipment: 10-pound dumbbells

  1. Start with a dumbbell in each hand. We recommend no more than 10 pounds for beginners.
  2. Bend forward at the waist, so your back is at a 45-degree angle to the ground. Be certain not to arch your back. Let your arms hang straight down. Ensure your neck is in line with your back and your core is engaged.
  3. Starting with your right arm, bend your elbow and pull the weight straight up toward your chest, making sure to engage your lat and stopping just below your chest.
  4. Return to the starting position and repeat with the left arm. This is one rep. Repeat 10 times for 3 sets.

6. Single-leg deadlifts

This is another exercise that challenges your balance. Single-leg deadlifts require stability and leg strength. Grab a light to moderate dumbbell to complete this move.

Equipment: dumbbell

  1. Begin standing with a dumbbell in your right hand, and your knees slightly bent.
  2. Hinging at the hips, begin to kick your left leg straight back behind you, lowering the dumbbell down toward the ground.
  3. When you reach a comfortable height with your left leg, slowly return to the starting position in a controlled motion, squeezing your right glute. Ensure that your pelvis stays square to the ground during the movement.
  4. Repeat 10 to 12 reps before moving the weight to your left hand and repeating the same steps on the left leg. It’s suggested to do 3 sets of 10-12 reps per side.

7. Burpees

An exercise we love to hate, burpees are a super-effective, whole-body move that provides great bang for your buck for cardiovascular endurance and muscle strength.

  1. Start by standing upright with your feet shoulder-width apart and your arms down at your sides.
  2. With your hands out in front of you, start to squat down. When your hands reach the ground, pop your legs straight back into a pushup position.
  3. Jump your feet up to your palms by hinging at the waist. Get your feet as close to your hands as you can get, landing them outside your hands if necessary.
  4. Stand up straight, bringing your arms above your head, and jump.
  5. This is one rep. Complete 3 sets of 10 reps as a beginner.

8. Side planks

A healthy body requires a strong core at its foundation, so don’t neglect core-specific moves like the side plank.

Focus on the mind-muscle connection and controlled movements to ensure you’re completing this move effectively.

  1. Lie on your right side with your left leg and foot stacked on top of your right leg and foot. Prop your upper body up by placing your right forearm on the ground and elbow directly under your shoulder.
  2. Contract your core to stiffen your spine and lift your hips and knees off the ground, forming a straight line with your body.
  3. Return to start in a controlled manner. Repeat 3 sets of 10–15 reps on one side, then switch.

9. Planks

Planks are an effective way to target both your abdominal muscles and your whole body. Planking stabilizes your core without straining your back the way situps or crunches might.

  1. Begin in a pushup position with your hand and toes firmly planted on the ground, your back straight, and your core tight.
  2. Keep your chin slightly tucked and your gaze just in front of your hands.
  3. Take deep, controlled breaths while maintaining tension throughout your entire body, so your abs, shoulders, triceps, glutes, and quads are all engaged.
  4. Complete 2-3 sets of 30-second holds to start.

10. Glute bridge

The glute bridge effectively works your entire posterior chain, which isn’t only good for you, but it’ll make your booty look perkier, too.

  1. Start by lying on the floor with your knees bent, feet flat on the ground, and arms straight at your sides with your palms facing down.
  2. Pushing through your heels, raise your hips off the ground by squeezing your core, glutes, and hamstrings. Your upper back and shoulders should still be in contact with the ground, and your core down to your knees should form a straight line.
  3. Pause 1–2 seconds at the top and return to the starting position.
  4. Complete 10–12 reps for 3 sets.

How to improve workouts

These fundamental exercises will do your body good, but there’s always room to keep pushing it.

If you notice yourself breezing through and barely breaking a sweat, focus on progressive overload by making each move more challenging by:

  • adding 5 more reps
  • adding more weight
  • tacking on a jump to moves like squats and lunges

Another way to switch it up? Turn the routine into a time-under-tension workout, completing each move for a set amount of time instead of for a set number of reps.

A resident, Odion Rufus told the publication; “During the week, we dispersed into the bush around the pipeline extension area from 8 pm till 12 am but we could not trace him.

“On Saturday morning, we conducted another round of search around the same location, and we were in the process of giving up when one of us advised that we should extend the search to an uncompleted building.

“We met his body with injuries on his head looking like he was hit with some of the firewood found close to the body.
