Ortom said this when Obi paid him a courtesy call at his private residence in Makurdi on Thursday, July 21, 2022.

The duo met behind closed doors before addressing journalists. Ortom of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, said the situation in Nigeria calls for all to be careful and pray to God for leaders who mean well for the survival of the country.

He told all presidential candidates to put Nigeria above personal interests.

Ortom commended the decision of the former Anambra governor to engage Nigerians on his desire to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari.

“He said even though he was a major stakeholder of the PDP, the candidate considered him as a Nigerian to consult on his aspiration,” a Government House statement said.

Obi said though they are now in different parties, their friendship as citizens of the country is the most important.

He lamented that millions of Nigerians have been impoverished by bad leadership.

Reno Omokri, a socio-political activist, has raised the alarm alleging that the members of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, are threatening him over comments against the Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

In a post on his official Facebook page, Omokri asserted that there is no difference between the secessionist group and the supporters of Peter Obi.

Omokri who vowed that IPOB cannot silence him, said they have disguised themselves as ‘Obidients’.

He wrote, “I criticised Peter Obi, the next day IPOB’s official lawyer blasted me? Then I started receiving threats left, right and centre?

“Who do you think you are kidding? Me? At night, in their covens, there is absolutely NO DIFFERENCE between IPOB and the core Obidients!. You can just imagine these IPOB people disguised as Obidients thinking they can silence me.

“Are you guys okay? Me? The vast majority of those who are enjoying the social media cruise with you may not know who you guys truly are, but I do!

“If you, the IPOB team at the core of this Obidient movement want to allow yourself to be deceived by these people who are only jumping on your train because they want to trend, that is your headache.

“But if you come after me, make sure you kill me. Because if I survive.”

JUST IN: Stranded Passengers Vandalise Dana Air Property At Lagos Airport

Some assets of Dana Air were on Thursday, July 21, 2022, at the Murtala Muhammed Airport Two (MMA2), Lagos, vandalised by aggrieved passengers who could not travel with the airline as scheduled due to the suspension slammed on the carrier by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA.

This is as the airline said that it has commenced the operational audit as directed by the regulatory agency, saying that it was fully cooperating with NCAA to ensure quick return to flight services.

At the MMA2 on Thursday, some of the passengers who had hitherto booked online with the airline to travel out of Lagos, expressed surprise and disappointment with the grounding of the carrier.

Some of them said that they were not informed of the suspension, while there was no text or email message to that effect from the airline.

Mostly affected were the passengers on Lagos-Abuja, Lagos-Port Harcourt, and other early morning routes out of Lagos.

Some of them were seen making frantic efforts to buy another airline’s tickets out of Lagos even at exorbitant rates, but failed.

When Daily Independent got to MMA2 where Dana Air operates from, some of the passengers were still stranded.

One of them who identified herself as Mrs. Bimpe Adewusi said she had a 10a.m appointment in Abuja on Thursday and was disappointed that she could not travel as planned.

She also expressed anger that none of the airline’s counter staff was on ground to attend to the stranded passengers. She said: ‘This is not the first time I would be disappointed by Dana Air.

I was at the airport early morning today (Thursday) to take a flight to Abuja for an appointment I have today at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Like others, I could not travel as planned. “The pain is that I cannot go as planned.

Why will an airline not inform its clients of its challenge until they get to the airport? They are not even rebooking us on another flight. We cannot also get refund for our money. I paid N57,000 for this flight, yet I can’t travel.”

Meanwhile, a statement by Mr. Kingsley Ezenwa, the Communications Manager, Dana Air, said it has commenced the operational audit as directed by NCAA.

The statement also said that Dana Air was cooperating with the NCAA to ensure its return to flight operations.

The statement added: “Operational audits are regulatory and airlines are required to suspend their operations when the regulator calls for it and we are confident that having been successful in previous audits, we will come back even stronger and better.

“The audit is also an opportunity for us to prove once again and reassure our guests, clients, and partners that we remain strong, safe, efficient, and reliable.”

Ezenwa said that as an airline, the carrier was not insulated from the multiple challenges airlines and the aviation industry are grappling with daily.

He mentioned some of the challenges to include the recent skyrocketing cost of aviation fuel at N830 per litre, unavailability of forex, ground handling services, inflation, and multiple taxation, among other operational challenges.

He said that the domestic airlines had made frantic efforts to communicate these challenges to the flying public and the government in the past.

He, however, regretted that the “short stay off the market remains painful and heartbreaking for us, our customers, clients and partners, we remain very hopeful and very confident of our position,” assuring that its offices would remain open to passengers, travel partners, and others throughout the period.

He stated that the airline’s customers with unused tickets have also been advised to apply for refunds by sending an email to contact@ flydanaair.com with their details and assured that it would try to resolve the issue in a timely manner.

NCAA had on Wednesday night suspended Dana Air’s Transport Licence (ATL) and Air Operator Certificate (AOC) indefinitely.

NCAA in a statement by Capt. Musa Nuhu said that the suspension was made pursuant to section 35(2), 3(b), and (4) of the Civil Aviation Act, 2006 and Part 1.3.3.3(a)(1) of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations (Nig.CARs), 2015.

Nuhu said that the decision to suspend the airline was the outcome of a financial and economic health audit carried out on it and the findings of an investigation conducted on the airline’s flight operations recently, which revealed that Dana Airlines is no longer in a position to meet its financial obligations and to conduct safe flight operations.

The three members of the party are: Salihu Maibuhu, Rabi,u Ilili and Abubakar Bargaja who were supporters of former Governor Abdul Aziz Yari.

They have announced their defection to the opposition PDP with thousands of their supporters, a situation that has dented the reconciliation process between Governor Bello Matawalle and Yari.

Speaking to The PUNCH on phone, one of the defectors, Salihu Maibuhu, said they were not interested in the reconciliation process between Matawalle and Yari, as such they decided to join PDP.

”We are not interested in Matawalle, Yari reconciliation and we have decided to defect to the opposition PDP in the state.

“We are not with Governor Bello Mattawalle and that was why we left the APC together with our supporters.

“We will however continue with our relationship with the former Governor Abdul Aziz Yari,” said Maibuhu.

In his reaction, the spokesperson for the state chapter of Zamfara APC, Yusuf Idris, said the party was never moved by the defection to PDP even though they did not officially announce their defection.

Idris said, “The APC has never been moved by their decision to defect even as they failed to officially inform the party of their move which was without any reason but self-aggrandisement.

“Just as they left the APC, we are happy that the ruling party has continued to receive and welcome more defectors in the state and keeping it ahead of other political parties.”

Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has said that his relationship with his All Progressives Congress, APC, counterpart, took a turn for the worse in 2007 after Bola Tinubu demanded he fields a Muslim-Muslim ticket in the presidential election of that year.

Atiku, who was the presidential candidate of the now-defunct opposition Action Congress, AC, contested against Umar Yar’Adua of the then-ruling PDP. Yar’Adua won the election, but died in office three years in May 2010.

Atiku, speaking on the past event during an interview with Arise Television, said that he became politically estranged with Tinubu after he presented Ben Obi, a Christian from southern Nigeria, as his vice-presidential candidate in the 2007 election.

He said: “He insisted on running with me and I didn’t believe it was right to have a Muslim-Muslim ticket.

“That was the point of my fundamental departure with him.”

The Action Congress was established by Atiku, Tinubu and other political heavy weights.

However, the alliance crashed by the 2011 election after Abubakar returned to the PDP, and Tinubu rebranded the party as Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN.

The ACN was amongst the five political blocks that became the now-ruling APC.

Sadio Mane Beats Mo Salah To Win African Player Of The Year Award

Sadio Mane was named African Footballer of Year on Thursday, July 21, 2022, after a season in which he kicked the winning penalty for Senegal as they claimed their first Africa Cup of Nations title and repeated the feat when they secured World Cup qualification.

Mane finished ahead of Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah, his former Liverpool team mate, and fellow Senegalese Edouard Mendy in the voting.

It was the second time the 30-year-old Mane, who last month joined German champions Bayern Munich, has won the award.

He was the last winner of the award in 2019. The Confederation of African Football did not hold it over of the last two years and has now changed to recognising accomplishments over the season rather than the calendar year.

Mane converted the winning penalty in February as Senegal beat Egypt in the Cup of Nations final in Yaounde, proving the talisman as his country took a first ever African title.

Six weeks later, he struck the decisive spot-kick as Senegal again edged Egypt in a penalty shootout to win a place at the World Cup finals in Qatar.

He overshadowed Salah on both occasions, although the pair shared success with Liverpool in the FA Cup and League Cup and helped them reach the Champions League final.

Mane also finished ahead of Salah in the 2019 voting. Salah, 30, won the award in 2017 and 2018 with Mane second on both occasions.

“I dedicate this award to the youth of Senegal. I’m very emotional and don’t have the words to express how I’m feeling,” Mane told the audience at the CAF awards in Rabat after flying in from Washington DC, where he scored in a pre-season friendly for his new club on Wednesday.

Mendy, who plays for Chelsea, was named the best goalkeeper in the world at FIFA’s 2021 award, held in January.

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar has criticized the defection of a co-contestant, Peter Obi, to the Labour Party.

Atiku made this assertion, on Friday, July 22, 2022, during an exclusive interview on AriseTV, monitored by Ripples Nigeria.

Peter Obi, who is the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, left the PDP just before its presidential primary, over alleged differences with stakeholders regarding the zoning of the presidency to the South-East.

Nonetheless, Atiku, in the interview said nobody should expect a miracle from Obi, because he defected.

The former Anambra State governor has amassed a huge social media following styled “OBIdients” but Atiku dismissed the group, noting that they were nowhere to be found during the recent Osun State elections.

Senator Ademola Adeleke of the PDP emerged victorious in the elections against incumbent Governor Gboyega Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and Yusuf Lasun, the LP candidate coming a distant fifth.

“I really don’t expect the Labour Party to take much votes from the PDP as people are speculating. They have no structure at all levels with no Governor, or lawmakers.

“It is difficult to expect a miracle to happen because Peter Obi is in Labour Party. They had said through the social media they have one million votes in Osun State but how many votes do they have in real life? In the northern part of the country, about 90 percent of people don’t have access to the social media. Most of the electorates are not on social media,” Atiku clarified.
