The 5 Best Nollywood Actors of 2013, According to Charles Novia

0

by Charles Novia

O C Ukeje The Trent

No 1: O.C. Ukeje

No apologies to anyone. My Number One Actor for 2013 would be OC Ukeje. In arriving at this conclusion, I had the uncomfortable task of distancing his acting in my movie ‘Alan Poza’ from the list of other movies he was assessed with. But one cannot ignore that in 2013 alone, OC has won the ‘Best Actor’ diadem FOUR TIMES at the AMVCA, NEA, BON and NMA awards. He has also been nominated for ‘ Best Actor’  a record EIGHT TIMES in a single year. Now, that is enough to make heads turn and so they should. This is a feat even the older acts in Nollywood cannot boast of.

Watching OC Ukeje in three movies in the past year was a stunning experience. Since 2006 when OC won the top prize in the ‘Amstel Malta Box Office’ (AMBO), the young man had been relatively quiet and picky with his scripts, preferring to feature more in stage productions and promising scripts. That sense of purpose paid off in the long run. Like the Bible says, you can’t hide a light under a bushel. OC’s illumination in the acting space can be seen in ‘Confusion Na Wa’, ‘The Awakening’ and ‘Hoodrush’. In these movies, the power of his art can be seen. He has an unusual intensity as an actor and a peculiar propensity to project his characterisation which would leave many with gaping mouths. This young man has a lot to give to us in the nearest future. All we have to do is to receive.

No 2: Ramsey Noah

It was tough putting Ramsey in the Number 2 spot because he is a damned good actor. Very good. Having worked with him in eight of my movies in the past, I know his abilities but I am yet to know his acting limitations. Over the years, Ramsey has explored his inner depths as an actor and tries to push the envelope. He comes across as one who takes his roles seriously and so he should. I watched him in three movies in 2013; ‘The Courier’, ‘Weekend Getaway’ and ‘Confusion Na Wa’. I think he particularly stood out more in ‘Confusion Na Wa’ where a mix of cinematography, directorial genius and a very good script brought out his sterling qualities in acting. But I believe Ramsey would stun us all in 2014 when Izu Ojukwu’s ’76′ hits the screens. From the short trailer I saw, there is something very dark and daring in Ramsey’s character in that movie. Aided with the retro feel in the movie as well as the costumes, one can sense an intensity in Ramsey’s character from the trailer. We are yet to see the best of Mr Noah. We have only seen the stirrings of a best.

Odunlade Adekola The Trent

No 3. Odunlade Adekola

I don’t judge actors on whether they are in Nollywood or in ‘Yoruwood’ or any other ethnic coinage. There are certain qualities an actor in any category of the industry must have in assessing him. Personally, I think the Yoruba movies as well as the other ethnic movies have an advantage over the English movies in the areas of acting because the acting comes naturally to them unlike the English movies where more is needed to compete with the global parameters. However, this actor in the Yoruba genre of movies, Odunlade Adekola, has stood out in 2013. I watched a couple of his movies and he impressed me with his style, attention to characterisation, internalisation and a restrained attempt not to be melo-dramatic. In movies such as ‘Baba Super’, ‘Eje Nla’, ‘Fayebora’ and sneak peeks I saw of ‘Eje Fun Eje’, Odunlade showed class among or even above his peers. I don’t even understand Yoruba so it speaks volumes about how his acting made an impact on me. I am told that he is presently the biggest star in the Yoruba film sector. I can see why. Talent do not lie.

BLOSSOM-CHUKWUJEKWU The Trent

Number 4: Blossom Chukwujekwu

Somehow, in 2013, Blossom came into the scene and perhaps asserted himself as one we all must take notice of.  I watched him in ‘Flower Girl’ in February 2013 at the cinemas and apart from an obvious on-screen charm, I could see that the young man put in a lot of work in his role. There was a certain energy he exuded in that movie which wasn’t lost on many. He isn’t just good looks. He seems to be eager to learn more and to prove himself beyond the ‘Fine Boy, No pimples’ looks. In ‘Flower Girl’, his internalisation was good enough and though there were small areas of artistic indecision when it came to delivery, Blossom overall gave a good account of himself. He found a better platform to excel in the movie ‘Finding Mercy’ where I saw marked improvements in his acting. His performance there was quite a cinema rouser for many, though his characterisation came to the fore after the first half-hour in the movie. His reactions were on point and he brought an emotional calibration to the whole movie in the last scene. Few budding actors have that ability. Blossom will certainly blossom in his career in 2014.

Seyi, Bovi The Trent

No 5: Comedians Seyi Law, Bovi Ugbomma, and Kelechi Udegbu

As controversial as this may seem to some people, I believe there are merits in recognising the names tied on this list on the number 5 spot. I could actually have chosen just one when it came to the crunch but decided to first and foremost acknowledge the input of these guys into the comedy genre of Nollywood , which is often overlooked when giving awards. Secondly, whether anyone likes it or not, these comedians do know HOW TO ACT.

If within the comfortable ambits of their arguable stereotypes, they could elicit rib-cracking spasms from millions of Nigerians all the time, then their ART must be commended and rewarded. These three are judged on different individual skits released on Youtube and other online platforms in 2013. Having watched those skits critically and also using the same criteria to judge their roles as with the other actors in this list, it should not come as a surprise that these guys scaled through in critical areas of delivery, characterisation and a huge dose of believability which induces spasmodic laughter. These comedians have a style of organic acting, peculiar to them which itself is an art form.

SEYI LAW though known as a stand-up comic, moved steps furthed in 2013 with some commendable acting in the the ‘Orijin in Ibadan’ sketch on youtube. Seyi was adept as the effusive and garulous Yoruba mogul who gets more than he bargained for in a restaurant. Though mostly improvised, the skit shows acceptable reaction points from Seyi and a good transistion from the garulous to the gutted.

KELECHI J. UDEGBU may not be well known to many of you. In fact, I never knew him from Adam before I stumbled on his comedy skit on youtube and I was completely blown away. His role as the corrupt Officer Titus, a parody of some of our staple traffic enforcement officers, is as funny as it is as formidable. What struck me in Kelechi was his ability to internalise the character in such a way that the rendition of his lines and his projection of the character found a perfect and almost-believable mix. Actors can be judged on minute clips or performances and though this youtube skit is short, I predict that Nollywood will soon be seeing more of Kelechi Udegbu in no short time. There are few new talents out there who are endowed with an undisputed capacity to act comically. This gentleman is one of such.

BOVI UGBOMMA is a popular and lovable stand-up comic who has a television series, ‘THE BOVI UGBOMMA SHOW’. His body of work in 2013 is quite impressive and amongst many of such, I particularly judged him on the Rhythm Unplugged promo currently shown on Silverbird Television. Bovi brought a certain humour into that short sketch as he always does in his outings. Notice the transistion from his angry storm to the bouncer who touched his girlfriend’s bum to the last bit where he pants and tells her he took a short cut. Classic. Like I said, these comedians are actors in their own rights too.

Spirit And Life Devotional: Time To Possess Your Inheritance

Spirit and Life Devotional is a daily publication by Pastor Chinaemerem Ibezim, senior pastor of Able Ministers Chapel, a church based in Calabar, Cross River State.
Jeremiah 49:1-2 NKJV “Against the Ammonites. Thus says the Lord : “Has Israel no sons? Has he no heir? Why then does Milcom inherit Gad, And his people dwell in its cities? Therefore behold, the days are coming,” says the Lord , “That I will cause to be heard an alarm of war In Rabbah of the Ammonites; It shall be a desolate mound, And her villages shall be burned with fire. Then Israel shall take possession of his inheritance,” says the Lord .”
Are you aware that all things are yours now? You can find that in 1 Corinthians 3:21. We also read in 1 Corinthians 2:12 that there are things God has freely given to us. Joshua 1:3 also reveals that wherever the soles of our feet treads upon has been given unto us.
If the above are true (they are true!), why then are a lot of God’s children not enjoying their inheritance? Why is it that the above verses seem not to be our realities? Why is it that unbelievers seem to be enjoying what’s ours? Why are we sick, weak, broke, bullied and oppressed? Why are we the victims? Not again! I refuse to be as a servant in my Father’s house!
It’s time to take possession of your inheritance! I speak, in the name of Jesus, to whatever or whoever has deprived you of what’s yours in Christ, take your filthy hands off what belongs to this reader in the name of Jesus! Victory is ours, in the name of Jesus! We now dwell in our inheritance! And this that the Lord has done shall be permanent! Glory to God!

No Joke: UK Man Quizzed For 8 Hours, Computer Seized, DNA Swabbed For Allegedly Cracking ‘Bad Taste’ Nelson Mandela Jokes

0

A sandwich shop owner endured eight hours of questioning by police and had his computer seized for three weeks – after making tasteless Nelson Mandela jokes on the internet.

Neil Phillips, who runs Crumbs in Rugeley, Staffordshire, says he was also finger-printed and DNA-swabbed after officers received complaints about what he insists were harmless gags.

In one online post, the 44-year-old wrote: ‘My PC takes so long to shut down I’ve decided to call it Nelson Mandela.’

Mandela, the former South African leader, and Nobel Peace Prize recipient, died on Thursday, aged 95.

Mr Phillips was arrested at his home on September 10 and was taken to a police station where he was quizzed about the postings on the Rugeley Soap Box website.

He said: ‘It was an awful experience. I was fingerprinted, they took DNA and my computer.

‘It was a couple of jokes, Bernard Manning type.

‘There was no hatred.

‘You can question the taste, but they’re not hateful. I told the police they got plenty of “likes”. What happened to freedom of speech?

‘I think they over-reacted massively. Those jokes are “out there”, anyway.

‘When they took my computer, I thought, “what the hell are they looking for?” To be questioned would have been over the top, never mind arrested.’

Chic & African: Nicole Hayley’s Matabele-Inspired Bags

I stumbled on this interview featuring a South Africa-based designer and what caught my attention was her strikingly chic bags.

Launched early this year, the Nicole Hayley brand aims “to produce designers bags with all elements sourced and manufactured in Africa.” As regards what inspires her label/new Collection, the Zimbabwean-born designer states that,

“The label has been inspired by my African heritage and by the richness of African art, each collection will showcase fabric designs particular to a certain region. The first collection has been inspired by the region in which I was born, Matabeleland in Zimbabwe. Matabeleland is home to the Ndebele people, their mural art inspired the fabric for the Matabele Collection.”

Iyayi Death: Autopsy Shows No Bullet Wounds Says Medical Source, “We are not aware” – Family

0
The family of Iyayi at the funeral of their father

A medical exam conducted to unravel the cause of death of Festus Iyayi showed no evidence of bullets, a source familiar with the autopsy disclosed.

Mr. Iyayi, a professor of business management at the University of Benin who was also a well known novelist and academic activist, he died November 12 in an automobile accident near Lokoja.

Mr. Iyayi was on his way to attend a meeting of the Academic Staff Union of Universities when the vehicle in which he was traveling was hit by a car in the convoy of Governor Idris Wada of Kogi State.

It was stated that a team of pathologists who included experts and witnesses from ASUU, medical doctors at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital and the Nigerian government carried out an autopsy and unanimously determined that Mr. Iyayi was not shot.

With the official report of the autopsy still being put together, our source disclosed that the participants in the autopsy confirmed the presence of holes in Mr. Iyayi’s body, even though they could not trace the piercings to any bullets. He added that medical examiners recovered no pellets from the late Professor’s body.

The autopsy was reportedly done about a week before the commencement of Mr. Iyayi’s funeral. The late academic’s funeral ended yesterday with a “thanksgiving Mass at Saint Mathew’s Catholic Church in Ugbegun, Edo State. Mr. Iyayi’s remains were buried in the same town on Saturday.

A renowned Nigerian writer and activist, Mr. Iyayi was a former national leader of ASUU. He also served as a former President of the Committee for the Defense of Human Rights (CDHR).

It was also disclosed that Mr. Iyayi was killed in a crash involving the convoy of Kogi State Governor, Mr. Wada. Mr. Iyayi was on his way to Kano to attend a council meeting of ASUU executives to discuss the next step in a long-running strike by lecturers that has grounded Nigeria’s public universities and mired the country’s education in a crisis.

However, members of the late Professor Iyayi’s family and activists close to him said they have not been informed of the final results of the autopsy. His son, Omole,  told the media  today that the family had not received any official autopsy reports from doctors in Benin. He said they were therefore surprised at the conclusions.

Opinion: The Uncelebrated Strike Affecting Nigerian Students

0

by Omowunmi Awosika

Polytechnic students have seemingly decided to remain voiceless, wallowing in self pity till God will arise from heaven. ASUP students must let the world know they exist, speak up, publicise it, don’t ‘be and act’ the second grade version you are labelled to be.

It’s so disheartening that the world does not know that the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) is on strike. The news everywhere is about the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) except those affected by it. ASUP is supposed to be fighting alongside ASUU but we do not hear anything about this struggle.

Polytechnic students have seemingly decided to remain voiceless, wallowing in self pity till God will arise from heaven. ASUP students must let the world know they exist, speak up, publicise it, don’t ‘be and act’ the second grade version you are labelled to be.

The neglect of the Federal Government towards the ongoing ASUP strike really shows the importance of Polytechnic education in Nigeria. It is so true that they have labelled it second rate, second to the so called great universities and the polytechnic students have chosen to be silent and “dumb” about it.

ASUP strike is now counting to 3 months and the so called “poly students” have chosen to continue to waste their time on social media. I am not saying it is bad to visit Facebook or the likes but speak up through these medium, raise your voice on Twitter and everywhere. Let the world know you exist and stop letting them stampede you, let the news be everywhere, ASUP is on strike too.

ASUP will never be out there, it will always be at the background if you refuse to make it known.

Slap on Wrist? Teacher, 27, Caught Laying ‘Half-naked’ With Student, 17, Is Banned From Teaching For 2 Years

0

A teacher who was found half-naked in a layby with one of her teenage pupils has been struck off for two years.

Eppie Sprung Dawson, 27, was found ‘unfit to teach’ by a disciplinary hearing in Edinburgh yesterday.

She was not present at the hearing, but in a statement read to the General Teaching Council for Scotland panel, she agreed to being struck off and admitted having sex with Matthew Robinson last December, when he was 17 years old.

She said: ‘On the 9th of February I was convicted at Dumfries Sheriff Court.

‘I engaged in sexual intercourse with him; Contrary to Section 42 of the Sexual Offences (Scotland) Act 2009.

‘I was sentenced on 18 September 2013 and sentenced to a Community Payback Order and made subject to the sex offenders register.

‘I readily and willingly consent to being removed and understand that I will be prohibited from teaching for a period of two years.’

The panel chairman, John Kilpatrick, said: ‘The panel agrees that the registrant should be removed from the register in the light of her declarations.’

The panel has referred Sprung Dawson – who taught English at St Joseph’s College in Dumfries – to the Scottish Government to see if she should be put on a list excluding her from working with children or vulnerable adults

Earlier this year at Dumfries Sheriff Court, Sprung Dawson admitted having sex with someone under 18, while in a position of trust.

She lost her job at St Joseph’s College and split from her husband of two years, Ranald, son of former Solicitor General for Scotland, Lord Sprung Dawson.

It is believed that she is now living with Mr Robinson in Dumfries.

The controversial case first hit the headlines in July when she appeared at Dumfries Sheriff Court and admitted having sex with someone under 18, while in a position of trust.

The pair had been at a school dance before driving to an isolated spot on the Cummertreese to Hoddam Road, near Dumfries, where they had sex.

They were caught by officers patrolling the area, just four days before Christmas last year.

As well as being struck from the teaching register, Mrs Sprung Dawson was placed on the sex offenders register and ordered to receive counselling as part of a community payback order.

She lost her job at St Joseph’s College in Dumfries and split from her husband of two years, Ranald Sprung Dawson, also a teacher and son of former Solicitor-General for Scotland, Lord Sprung Dawson.

In September a Sheriff caused controversy when he praised Ms Sprung Dawsons ‘exemplary’ behaviour during her community service at a review in court.

Dumfries sheriff George Jamieson agreed to allow Sprung Dawson, to complete her sentence without returning to court.

Speaking at the time, he said: ‘I fixed this review to ensure that you were complying with it. It wasn’t meant to be an easy order for you to deal with.’
