The Ogun State Police Command, yesterday, said it had apprehended the mother and two brothers of a suspected run‑away rapist, Tosin Ojo, who reportedly raped a 14‑year‑old girl.

The prosecutor, Assistant Superintendent of Police, ASP, Christopher Joseph, told the court that the suspect committed the offence last month on the roadside in the middle of the night in Abeokuta.

Joseph also explained that the accused, who was facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and rape, ran away after he committed the offence.

He, however, told the court that the inability of Police to arrest the suspect had forced them to apprehend three members of his family, including his mother.

“Three family members of the suspect have been arrested due to the absence of the accused. They are all in Police custody. We will not release them until we get the accused,” the prosecutor said.

Explaining how the suspect allegedly committed the offence, Joseph said the suspect threatened the victim with a broken bottle.

He said: “The accused met the girl at a roadside in the middle of the night in Abeokuta and raped her. He even threatened to kill her if she refused him.”

The presiding judge, Justice Gabriel Majekodunmi, however, ordered that the suspect be brought to court at the adjourned date .

Majekodunmi, who did not rule on the number of days the family of the suspect who were arrested instead by police would spend in the Police custody, however, adjourned the case till June 26.
