Nigeria’s First Lady Aisha Buhari has broken her silence on the rumoured plan by her husband, President Muhammadu Buhari to take a second wife.
In an interview with BBC Hausa Service upon her return to Nigeria on Sunday, October 13, 2019, the first lady said she was the wrong person to ask for a confirmation of the rumour of a wedding between the president and a minister.
“I don’t know what happened because I was not around,” the first lady told BBC.
“I’m not the one who was getting married. It was the president. So, you should have asked him whether it is true or not.
“But the person who was told the president will marry her, the people that told her the president will marry her, she never thought the wedding will not hold, because she waited and when it never held she came out to dispute it.
“So, because of that I’m not the one to say whether there will be wedding or not. I’m already a married woman in her matrimonial home. I’m not bothered,” she retorted.
The woman said to be President Buhari’s new love interest is Sadiya Umar Farouq is the current minister of humanitarian affairs, disaster management and social development and the former federal commissioner of National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons.
Mrs. Buhari, who has been away from the country for more than two months, made her return on Sunday, as rumours that her husband was taking a second wife on Friday, October 11, 2019.
Ms. Farouq, 44, is from Zamfara State.
Aisha Buhari, 48, married General Muhammadu Buhari when she was 18. They have four adult children.
The minister has remained mum on these marriage rumours.
