The management of the University of Ibadan, Nigeria’s premier university, has shut the institution indefinitely.
It has also ordered all students to vacate the university campus by 4pm on Tuesday, April 26, 2016 until further notice.
The decision followed protracted unrest among students on campus over the suspension of a students’ union leader by the students’ disciplinary committee and non-availability of some essential amenities on campus.
Besides the suspension of the student leader, the students complained about lack of power and water which they said had made their learning difficult.
The rampaging students disrupted lectures when they used canes to chase their colleagues from the classrooms. They also locked all the entrances to the campus, thereby preventing students and lecturers from entering the school.
Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Abel Olayinka, said the decision to close the university was occasioned by the violent protest of the students, saying life threatening messages are being sent and many students are covering their faces during the protest.
