GUJBA, Nigeria – Suspected Boko Haram militants launched a deadly attack on Gujba town in Yobe State on Saturday, March 8, 2025, killing a 32-year-old vigilante, Modu Bulama, and destroying several buildings and shops.
The assault occurred while residents were asleep, with the insurgents moving from house to house in search of vigilante members. Bulama was killed as he attempted to escape the attackers.
The incident was confirmed by Dr. Goje Muhammad, Executive Secretary of the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), who stated that the agency had conducted an assessment of the damage and extended condolences to the victims and Bulama’s family.
“Our assessment found that 14 households, comprising about 57 individuals, were directly affected. A total of 12 blocks of rooms and eight shops—mostly owned by business owners and local vigilante members—were destroyed by fire,” Muhammad said.
“Tragically, a 32-year-old vigilante lost his life, leaving behind two wives and seven children.”
Governor Mai Mala Buni has expressed sympathy for the victims and assured them of government support.
He also promised enhanced security measures to protect lives and property in the state.
Yobe State has been a frequent target of Boko Haram militants, with the group carrying out numerous attacks over the years despite government assurances of improved security.
The latest incident has heightened fears among residents, particularly in Buni Yadi, the hometown of Governor Buni.
The attacks have raised concerns about the worsening security situation in Yobe State, with residents calling for urgent action to curb the activities of insurgents.
Boko Haram, which has been active in northeastern Nigeria for over a decade, continues to pose a significant threat to the region despite ongoing military operations aimed at dismantling the group.
