2027: Governor Makinde Warns Against Rigging, Says Attempt ‘Will Be Met With Madness’

Must read

IBADAN, Nigeria — Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has issued a pointed warning to political actors planning to interfere with the conduct of the 2027 gubernatorial election, declaring that any attempt to rig the polls “will be met with madness.”

Makinde’s remarks, captured in a video circulating widely on social media on Monday, November 24, 2025, underscored growing political tension in the state as the governor prepares to leave office at the end of his second term.

“In a few months, I will be out of here. I have already started preparations for the transition,” Makinde said, signalling that the political landscape of the state will soon shift to new contenders.

He added, “In 2027, other players will be there. If they think attacking Seyi Makinde and politicising this issue will make the people vote for them, maybe they should think again. Oyo State people are wiser.”

The governor cautioned that the political consciousness of residents had increased significantly in recent years, making it unlikely, he said, that voters would tolerate any manipulation of the electoral process.

Speaking further, Makinde addressed those contemplating electoral malpractice.

“The next set of leaders will be the ultimate deciders. If you think you can rig the gubernatorial elections in Oyo State in 2027, think again. ‘Were, la n fi wo were’ (We will use madness to cure madness),” he said.

Makinde has repeatedly emphasised that the power to determine his successor rests squarely with the people of Oyo State.

His latest comments echo earlier statements dismissing the influence of political powerbrokers, asserting that decisions in 2027 “lie strictly with the people,” not with individuals “claiming entitlement.”

The governor’s warning comes as political alignments intensify across the state, with parties and aspirants positioning themselves ahead of what is expected to be a fiercely contested election.
