2027: Wike Leads Former PDP Governors to Meet with Tinubu

Must read

ABUJA, Nigeria — President Bola Tinubu held a closed-door meeting on Saturday, June 14, 2025, evening with key figures from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), fuelling speculation of a potential political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The meeting, which took place at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, was convened by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and included several of his close political allies.

Most of the attendees were former members of the G5 Governors — a faction of PDP leaders who openly opposed the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, during the 2023 election cycle.

Among those present were former Ekiti State governor Ayodele Fayose, former Benue State governor Samuel Ortom, and former Abia State governor Okezie Ikpeazu.

All three are associated with the group that broke ranks with the PDP leadership in 2022 and threw their support behind Tinubu’s candidacy under the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Wike, who served as governor of Rivers State until May 2023, played a central role in the G5’s rebellion.

In the aftermath of the 2023 polls, Tinubu appointed Wike — despite his PDP membership — as Minister of the FCT in a move seen as both conciliatory and strategic.

Though the Presidency has not released an official statement, sources familiar with the meeting said discussions revolved around political cooperation and the integration of the former governors into the administration’s broader political framework.

One source described the meeting as “exploratory but significant,” suggesting that further engagements may follow.
