The incessant boat mishap in Nigeria has led to the death of many commuters who were trying to beat traffic gridlock that is common on our busy and bad roads.
A commercial passenger boat capsized during the weekend between Dere in Niger State and Murtala Bridge on the River Niger with 33 passengers declared dead.
According to ThisDay, the sad accident occurred at 4.30 am when a pipeline patrol team flashed its light on the boat which led to the loss of control of the passenger boat conveying about 100 passengers, causing it to hit a tree in the river before it capsized.
The local boat, which set off from Katcha Local Government, Niger State to Lokoja market was said to have split into two.
Many lives were lost because the boat was overloaded and passengers did not have life jackets. Aside from the 100 passengers it carried, the boat also had on board 100 bags of rice, baskets of fish and other valuables.
Confirming the incident, the Niger state police command public relations officer, ASP Abiodun Gambari, said the incident occurred outside the jurisdiction of Niger State.
