For many people the family room is the heart of the home. It is where people gather to relax, hang out, and to be together as a family. With so much time spent in your family room, help make that space even more inviting, warm, and comfortable by adding these five inexpensive elements.
1. Candles
Candles not only smell great, they add a “homey” feel to any space. Find a few scented candles you like and place them on your mantel, coffee table, or side tables. You can cycle out scents for different seasons, using heavier scents such as cinnamon and vanilla in the winter and fall, and lighter scents such as sandalwood and lavender in the spring and summer.
2. Throw Blankets
Throw blankets are great additions to any family room. They are great to cuddle up with in the colder months and with so many color and textural options to choose from, they can also serve as a design element.
3. Bowl of Treats
Adding a bowl of wrapped candy or individually packaged treats will be a hit with everyone in your family. Find a decorative bowl or vase laying around the house and fill it with a favorite treat. Just make sure the candy you choose is individually wrapped so that it won’t create a mess or attract any insects and bugs.
4. Picture Frames
Use your mantel and any shelving units to house pictures of your family and friends. Pick a few inexpensive but decorative picture frames and fill them with pictures of your favorite memories. Not only is it great to have pictures out to remind you of great memories, but pictures are also great conversation starters when entertaining.
5. Flowers
Fresh flowers are a great way to instantly liven up your living room and add elements of color. Although it’s not realistic or budget friendly to always have fresh flowers, try to incorporate them occasionally and for big holidays.
