MINNA, Nigeria — Eight people were killed on Monday, March 30, 2026 after a vehicle struck an improvised explosive device in Niger State, police said, in an attack linked to suspected militants operating in the area.
The explosion occurred along a route between Nuku and Woro in Borgu Local Government Area, where the vehicle detonated the device, killing all seven passengers and the driver, according to officials.
Authorities said the explosive was planted by suspected terrorists who had earlier used a similar device to destroy a bridge along Luma Road, a key route connecting the Luma, Babana and Agwara communities.
The damaged bridge serves as a major link for residents, particularly those travelling to the Babana border market, which operates weekly on Mondays.
Police Response
Wasiu Abiodun, spokesman for the Niger State Police Command, confirmed the incident and said security forces were conducting clearance operations in the area.
“On 23rd March 2026 at about 6.30 am, a report received revealed that on the same date at about 2 am, suspected terrorists within the park forest used an explosive device and bombed a bridge located along Luma road, Borgu LGA, connecting Luma-Babana-Agwara communities,” Abiodun said.
“It was discovered that the bridge was damaged by the hoodlums during security operations in the area.
“However, monitoring continues while clearance operation is intensified,” he added.
The attack highlights continuing security challenges in parts of Niger State, where armed groups have been active in forested areas and along key transport routes.
Police said operations are ongoing to secure the affected communities and prevent further incidents.
