1. Retro

JONNY VALIANT

Designer Mona Ross Berman used quiet shades of a yellow palette in the guest room of this retro-themed beach house. “Even when I don’t use the same colors everywhere, I still like the room to feel connected. The bedroomshould never feel like it’s in a completely different house from theliving room—the whole house has to make sense as one.”

2. Classic Elegance

CHRISTOPHER BAKER

The late, legendary designer Albert Hadley and designer Harry Heissmann used this four-poster, which the owners already had, to create a truly cozy master bedroom. Swing-arm reading lights are just where you want them – inside the canopy. All lampshades by Blanche Field. Linens by Pratesi. The duvet cover in Giris by Bengal House was custom-quilted by De Angelis.

3. Coastal

Hanging for decades in the this same spot, the chandelier in the master bedroom of a  Northern Michigan lake cottage was freshened with paint. The four-poster bed’s headboard is in Ralph Lauren’s Coastal Stripe in Yellow & White. The homeowner’s stools were painted bright white then reupholstered in Raoul Textiles’ Chunari in Blue Willow. “It’s not supposed to be tremendously sophisticated — just fun and easy and simple,” designer Tom Stringer says

4. French Country

FRANCESCO LAGNESE
This guest room in a 18th-century Long Island house, designed by Tom Scheerer, takes its French Provincial flavor from Quadrille’s Lafayette toile de Jouy on the walls

5. Romantic

“When you’re the parents of six children, you absolutely need a retreat,” says designer Susan Zises Green, and the master bedroom in a Connecticut house, with its pinks and greens and roses everywhere, its comfortable seating area, its deft touches of sophisticated gilt, nicely fits the bill. The Harlow bench is from John Rosselli.

6. Cool Color

With a cool dip of color and a bright splash of pattern, an attic-like space in a Hamptons cottage became a lofty and restful haven. Designer Leslie Klotz found the quilt at a Brimfield summer antiques show, the accent pillow in Venice. Lamp by Christopher Spitzmiller. Wall color is Spring Mint and trim is Light Touch, both by Benjamin Moore.

7. Glamorous

The red velvet headboard in the master bedroom of a new California house is “grand, whimsical, over-the-top,” designer Stephen Shubel says. “But we didn’t want the whole room to be over-the-top. So we did very classic ivory velvet curtains the same color as the walls with traditional furniture on either side of the bed.” The rug is from Stark metal lamps from Martin Richards.

8. Belgian-Inspired

In the master bedroom of a comfortable family house, an antique door is the headboard, a trick designer Kay Douglass often uses to add interest while taking up less space in the room. Ivy-patterned pillowcases are custom-made from Galbraith & Paul fabric. The pair of Earl chairs are from South of Market. Walls are Seapearl by Benjamin Moore.

9. All White

Photographer Amy Neunsinger transformed her Los Angeles home  into a simple yet modern home. In the master bedroom, the pickled white wood floors combined with white walls create an ethereal feeling. The headboard and bedding are from Shabby Chic.
