LAGOS, Nigeria — President Bola Tinubu has reportedly declared that all grievances between him and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu have been resolved, telling party stakeholders that “all is forgiven” during a private meeting in Ikoyi on Sunday, June 8, 2025.
According to reports by ThisDay, Tinubu made the remarks during a gathering with the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC), the apex political leadership body of the Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The meeting followed weeks of speculation over a perceived rift between the president and Sanwo-Olu.
“It’s all over now. All is forgiven,” Tinubu was quoted as saying by sources present at the meeting.
The statement was reportedly made in response to direct appeals for reconciliation from members of the GAC.
Though neither Tinubu nor Sanwo-Olu explicitly addressed the root of the alleged conflict, sources told ThisDay that the governor and the delegation prostrated before the president as a sign of humility and to seek forgiveness.
Tensions between the two political figures had become a subject of public discourse following two high-profile incidents last week.
On Saturday, May 31, 2025, during the inauguration of Phase 1, Section 1 of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, Tinubu was seen greeting other dignitaries but appearing to bypass Sanwo-Olu, instead offering a handshake directly to Kogi State Governor Ahmed Ododo.
Further fuelling the rumours, Sanwo-Olu was absent on Thursday, June 5, 2025, at another presidential function — the flag-off of the deep seaport access road reconstruction project in Lagos — despite having a seat reserved for him.
Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat attended the event in his place.
Speculation over a strained relationship has also been linked to the brief impeachment of Lagos Assembly Speaker Mudashiru Obasa earlier this year.
Though Obasa was later reinstated, political observers have pointed to the episode as indicative of internal discord within the Lagos APC hierarchy.
Neither the presidency nor the Lagos State Government has released an official statement addressing the alleged rift or confirming the details of the reconciliation meeting.
However, in remarks to journalists after Sunday’s gathering, Sanwo-Olu dismissed talk of a feud, stating: “Do you see any discord? Can’t you see that you are smiling? I’m smiling. There’s none.”
The governor added, “There are people who believe that they are more Catholic than the Pope. People are just crying more than the bereaved.”
