ABUJA, Nigeria — President Bola Tinubu has submitted an additional 65 names to the Senate for ambassadorial appointments, expanding a diplomatic nomination process that began last week with three non-career nominees.
The request was announced during Thursday, December 4, 2025’s plenary, where Senate President Godswill Akpabio read the president’s letter to lawmakers.
The new list comprises 34 career ambassadors and high commissioners, along with 31 non-career nominees.
Several high-profile political figures, former public office holders and senior technocrats are included among those selected for overseas postings.
Prominent nominees include Mahmood Yakubu, the former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission; former presidential aide Reno Omokri; former governors Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State and Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State; former Lagos deputy governor Femi Pedro; Senator Jimoh Ibrahim of Ondo North; Florence Ajimobi, widow of the late Oyo governor, Abiola Ajimobi; and former Ekiti first lady Angela Adebayo.
Tinubu said the new batch reflects a combination of seasoned diplomats and individuals drawn from diverse professional backgrounds.
“Thirty-four persons were nominated as career ambassadors and high commissioners, while thirty-one were nominated as non-career ambassadors and high commissioners,” he wrote.
Among the career nominees are Sulu-Gambari Ahmed from Kwara State and Segun Ige from Edo State.
The non-career list includes former Adamawa senator Grace Bent and former Akwa Ibom senator Ita Enang.
Following the reading of the letter, Akpabio referred the nominations to the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs.
The committee was instructed to conclude its work within one week and report back to the chamber.
The Senate has already cleared an initial batch of three nominees transmitted earlier by the president: Ayodele Oke of Oyo State, Amin Mohammed Dalhatu of Jigawa, and retired Colonel Lateef Kayode Are of Ogun.
