AWKA, Nigeria — The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Ikioye Orutugu, has ordered the immediate rearrest of two robbery suspects who were mistakenly freed due to what authorities described as administrative lapses by a police prosecutor.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed the development in a statement on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, in Awka.
Ikenga said the directive followed new testimony from victims who identified the suspects as participants in an armed robbery case.
“In a swift response, the Command filed a new charge before the High Court sitting in the state to ensure that justice is duly served,” he said.
The PPRO added that the fresh charges were part of efforts to correct the error and reaffirm the Command’s resolve to pursue justice without compromise.
Orutugu also directed that disciplinary action be taken against the police prosecutor responsible for the lapses.
The commissioner, Ikenga noted, maintains a “zero-tolerance stance on professional negligence” and stressed that such failures would not be tolerated under his leadership.
“The decisive action underscores the Command’s unwavering commitment to professionalism, accountability, and the rule of law in the discharge of its duties,” Ikenga said.
The statement did not disclose the names of the suspects but assured the public that efforts were underway to ensure their immediate rearrest.
