As Trump Threatens Action, Tinubu Insists Nigeria Will Triumph Over Terrorism

ABUJA, Nigeria — President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s determination to defeat terrorism and secure Nigeria’s future, pledging that ongoing political and diplomatic pressures will not deter his government from its national security goals.

Speaking on Thursday, November 6, 2025, after receiving an economic update from Wale Edun, Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Tinubu said the government remains committed to ensuring peace, stability, and prosperity for Nigerians.

“Despite the political headwinds and the fear of our people, we continue to engage our partners,” the president said.

“We are engaging the world diplomatically. I assure you all that we will defeat terrorism.”

Tinubu added that his administration’s efforts are guided by the Renewed Hope Agenda, which he described as a clear roadmap to achieving economic growth and security reform.

“The task ahead is to move forward with clarity of purpose guided by the Renewed Hope agenda to build a prosperous Nigeria,” he said.

The president’s comments come amid escalating diplomatic tension following remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump, who threatened military action against Nigeria over alleged attacks on Christians.

On Saturday, November 1, 2025, Trump instructed the U.S. Department of War to “prepare for possible action,” claiming that Nigeria had become hostile to its Christian population.

“If the Nigerian Government continues to allow the killing of Christians, the U.S.A. will immediately stop all aid and assistance to Nigeria and may very well go into that now disgraced country, ‘guns-a-blazing,’” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

He also redesignated Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern,” citing what he described as “mass slaughter” of Christians — a claim that has been strongly refuted by Nigerian authorities.

Earlier, a group of U.S. lawmakers had urged Secretary of State Marco Rubio to take diplomatic action against Nigeria, alleging “systematic persecution and slaughter of Christians.”

Tinubu, in response, dismissed the allegations as misleading and unrepresentative of Nigeria’s diverse and tolerant society.

“The characterisation of Nigeria as religiously intolerant does not reflect our national reality, nor does it recognise government efforts to safeguard freedom of religion and belief,” he said in an earlier statement.

He reiterated that Nigeria remains a multi-faith democracy governed by constitutional guarantees of religious freedom and that his administration is working with Christian and Muslim leaders alike to address security challenges across regions.

As the government works to manage both domestic and international pressures, Tinubu emphasised that the fight against terrorism — alongside economic revitalisation — remains central to his administration’s mission.

“Our focus is on ensuring that Nigeria emerges stronger, safer, and more united,” he said.
