ABUJA, Nigeria — Muhammed Babangida, son of former military president Ibrahim Babangida, has formally accepted his appointment as Chairman of the Bank of Agriculture (BOA), putting to rest speculation that he had rejected the role.
President Bola Tinubu appointed Babangida on 18 July as part of a series of leadership changes aimed at strengthening key government institutions. Babangida confirmed his acceptance of the role in a statement released on Monday, following reports suggesting he had turned down the appointment.
“We wish to clarify that Muhammed gratefully accepts the appointment as Chairman of the Bank of Agriculture, as announced by the federal government, and extends his sincere appreciation to President Tinubu for the trust and confidence bestowed upon him,” the statement read.
The clarification came amid what Babangida described as “false and malicious” reports intended to mislead the public and discredit the Tinubu administration.
He condemned the reports, describing them as a “deliberate attempt” to tarnish both his reputation and the credibility of the federal government. The statement further emphasised that those responsible for circulating the claims would be “thoroughly investigated and brought to justice.”
“We also want to assure the public that those spreading these falsehoods will be thoroughly investigated and brought to justice. We remain committed to transparency, accountability, and fostering unity within our nation,” it said.
In a post on social media, Dada Olusegun, Special Assistant to the President on Social Media, reiterated the administration’s confidence in Babangida’s leadership, noting that the appointment was among several strategic placements approved by President Tinubu to enhance governance and institutional effectiveness.
The statement concluded with an appeal to Nigerians to rely on credible sources for information and to remain vigilant against the spread of misinformation.
