ABUJA, Nigeria — Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has voiced strong support for the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) decision to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to the South, describing it as a strategic move to foster unity and reposition the party ahead of the next general election.
The PDP’s National Executive Committee (NEC) reached the resolution on Monday, August 25, 2025, during a meeting in Abuja, where it also ratified Amb. Umar Iliya Damagum as the party’s substantive National Chairman.
Speaking in an interview with Africa Independent Television (AIT) on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, Mohammed said the zoning arrangement was part of a broader effort to rebuild trust and stability within the PDP.
“I am very satisfied with the resolution because I’m part and parcel of it — from the arrangement, strategy, and delivery,” the governor said.
“It is an all-inclusive decision to sustain the zoning formula and to zone the presidential office to the South so we can have some sanity, understanding, and unity.”
He emphasised that politics should not be driven by personal ambition but by sacrifice and collective interest.
“Politics is not about self-interest. It is about actualisation within the framework of party decisions and national progress. Everything is predicated on sacrifice, not selfishness. We must live and let live, and remember that power comes from God,” Mohammed said.
The governor expressed confidence that PDP governors, the National Working Committee, and the Board of Trustees are aligned in their commitment to repositioning the party as a credible alternative to Nigerians in 2027.
