SÃO PAULO, Brazil — Brazilian football star Neymar Jr. has tested positive for COVID-19 and is currently in isolation, his club Santos FC confirmed in a statement released on Sunday, June 8, 2025.
The 33-year-old forward began exhibiting symptoms on Thursday, June 5, 2025, and underwent medical evaluation, with tests later confirming the infection.
“With a viral condition that began on Thursday (June 5), Neymar Jr. underwent laboratory tests after evaluation by the Medical Department of Santos FC, which confirmed infection by Covid-19,” the club stated.
“The player had already been away from activities since Thursday, when he began showing symptoms, and remains resting at home and undergoing symptomatic treatment, as determined by a doctor.”
Santos has not announced a definitive timeline for Neymar’s return to training or matches, but the forward was already set to miss the club’s upcoming fixture against Fortaleza due to suspension.
The match against Fortaleza will be Santos’ final outing before the Brazilian league enters a one-month pause from Saturday, June 14, 2025 to Sunday, July 13, 2025, for the FIFA Club World Cup, to be held in the United States.
Neymar’s short-term future at Santos remains in doubt, with his current contract set to expire on Monday, June 30, 2025.
The former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain star has struggled with fitness since rejoining the club earlier this year, managing just 12 appearances across all competitions, with three goals and three assists.
It is unclear whether the COVID-19 diagnosis will affect any potential negotiations regarding Neymar’s contract renewal or transfer discussions.
The club has yet to comment on next steps regarding the player’s future.
