President Jovonel Moïse of Haiti has been assassinated, his wife injured.
Moïse was killed in his private residence in Port-au-Prince by a group of assailants at about 1:00 AM. local time Wednesday, July 7, 2021.
Statement by Haitian Prime Minister Claude Joseph said the assailants were Spanish-speaking.
The attack followed years of protests against Moïse’s government and calls for his resignation. Moïse has served as Haiti’s president since February 2017.
