ABUJA, Nigeria — President Bola Tinubu has summoned an emergency session of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) scheduled for Tuesday, July 15, 2025, dedicated solely to honouring the life and service of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away earlier today in a London hospital.
In a personally signed condolence statement released on Sunday, July 13, 2025, President Tinubu described Buhari‘s passing as a moment of “profound sorrow and a heavy heart,” saying Nigeria had lost “a patriot, a soldier, and a statesman to the very core.”
Recalling Buhari’s dual leadership as both a military ruler (1984–1985) and a democratically elected president (2015–2023), Tinubu praised the late president for a life defined by “duty, honour, and a deep commitment to the unity and progress of our nation.”
“He stood firm through the most turbulent times, leading with quiet strength, profound integrity, and an unshakable belief in Nigeria’s potential,” Tinubu said.
“He championed discipline in public service, confronted corruption head-on, and placed the country above personal interest at every turn.”
President Tinubu announced a seven-day national mourning period and directed that all flags across the country be flown at half-staff beginning immediately.
He also confirmed that the late president will receive full state honours, in recognition of his “towering contributions to our country.”
“We honour his service. We reflect on his legacy. And we pray for the peaceful repose of his soul,” the statement read.
The President extended his condolences to the former First Lady, Aisha Buhari, the Buhari family, the people of Katsina State, and the Daura Emirate.
He said he had been in touch with Mrs Buhari and promised continued support during this difficult period.
Closing his tribute, Tinubu prayed for Allah to forgive Buhari’s shortcomings and grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus.
“And may his life continue to inspire generations of Nigerians to serve with courage, conviction, and selflessness,” he said.
Details of the funeral arrangements and official ceremonies are expected to be announced in the coming days.
