LOS ANGELES, United States — Chuck Norris, the martial arts champion and action film star who became a household name through his television role in “Walker, Texas Ranger,” has died at the age of 86, his family said.
Norris died peacefully on Thursday, March 20, 2026, surrounded by family members, according to a statement released by relatives.
They described him as a “devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather, an incredible brother, and the heart of our family.”

Career Across Film and Television
Born in Oklahoma in 1940, Norris served in the United States Air Force before rising to prominence as a martial artist.
He later transitioned into acting, gaining wider recognition after appearing alongside Bruce Lee in the 1972 film “Way of the Dragon.”
Over subsequent decades, Norris built a career in action films during the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s.
He later became widely known to television audiences for portraying Cordell “Cord” Walker in the long-running series “Walker, Texas Ranger,” which ran for nine seasons and spanned 196 episodes.
His later screen appearances included roles in films such as “Dodgeball” (2004) and “The Expendables 2” (2012), introducing him to newer audiences.

Tributes From Family and Public Figures
Members of Norris’s family shared tributes following the announcement of his death. His daughter, Danilee, described him as someone who “loved so deeply and cared for every single person in his life with so much tenderness.”
“He may have a warrior exterior, but his heart was so full of love,” she said.
His grandson Max wrote, “Rest Heavenly, Papa,” while his son Dakota said, “You made sure I knew how much you loved me.”
Public figures from the worlds of film, sport and politics also paid tribute.
Actor Sylvester Stallone said he “had a great time working with Chuck,” describing him as “a great man.”
Actor Jean-Claude Van Damme said, “He will never be forgotten.”
Swedish actor Dolph Lundgren, who appeared with Norris in “The Expendables 2,” described him as a role model, noting his “respect, humility and strength.”

Cultural Influence Beyond the Screen
Beyond his film and television work, Norris became a prominent figure in internet culture through a series of widely shared jokes and memes that highlighted his tough on-screen persona.
Some of these portrayed exaggerated feats of strength or invincibility, contributing to his recognition among younger audiences.
His influence also extended internationally.
A 2015 documentary, “Chuck Norris Vs Communism,” explored how films featuring Norris were circulated in Romania during the Cold War, where they were said to offer audiences a sense of hope.

Connections and Public Life
Norris was known to have relationships with several prominent political figures, including former United States President George H. W. Bush, former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
In a statement, the George and Barbara Bush Foundation said Norris would be remembered “not only for his many talents, but for the warmth and friendship he extended to those who knew him.”
Norris is survived by his wife, Gena O’Kelley, and his children.
His family said they preferred to keep the circumstances surrounding his death private.
