IBADAN, Nigeria — Former Oyo State Governor, Rashidi Ladoja, will be crowned the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland on Friday, September 26, 2025, marking the formal ascension of one of the city’s most prominent political and cultural figures to its revered throne.
According to Adeola Oloko, media aide to Ladoja, the coronation will take place at Mapo Hall, Oja-Oba, a symbolic venue for major Ibadan traditional and political events.
The decision followed the approval of Ladoja’s nomination by Governor Seyi Makinde, after consultations between the state government and the Olubadan Advisory Council.
The state government is expected to issue an official statement ahead of the coronation.
Ladoja, who was nominated by the Olubadan-in-Council on Monday, August 4, 2025, ascends the throne following the death of Oba Owolabi Olakulehin on Monday, July 7, 2025.
Reflecting on his new role during a welcome gathering at his Bodija residence, Ladoja admitted he had not anticipated stepping into the position so soon.
“When I heard of Kabiyesi’s death, it was so painful to me because I told myself that I wasn’t ready. I thought he would reign for maybe five to ten years, but the deed has been done,” he said.
Ladoja noted that his rise to the throne has been a long journey, spanning 31 years since his installation as Jagun Balogun on October 1, 1993.
The Olubadan-designate also reflected on the absence of notable figures who had witnessed his first chieftaincy title, including his former deputy governor Alao-Akala, business magnate MKO Abiola, and political leader Lamidi Adedibu.
“Many of those who saw my installation as Jagun are no longer alive, which tells me my purpose in life has not been fully fulfilled,” he said.
