Abuja, Nigeria — The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has officially confirmed the arrest and detention of Martins Otse, widely known by his social media moniker “VeryDarkMan” (VDM), citing his repeated failure to respond to formal invitations over allegations of financial misconduct.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, by EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale, the anti-graft agency revealed that Otse was invited for questioning after a series of petitions were filed against him, all bordering on alleged financial crimes.
“Martins Otse was invited owing to a series of petitions bordering on sundry issues of alleged financial crimes raised against him,” Oyewale said.
Despite multiple attempts to reach Otse through his known addresses and communication channels, the commission said he failed to respond — prompting his arrest.
“He refused to show up in spite of several invitations sent to him,” the statement noted.
Oyewale emphasised that Otse’s detention was strictly based on legal grounds and not influenced by his vocal criticism of the EFCC.
The influencer has gained notoriety online for provocative commentary on political and social issues, including harsh critiques of government institutions.
“EFCC is aware of several unguarded attacks made by Otse against its operations; his arrest was not motivated by those actions,” Oyewale clarified.
He added that Otse’s detention is backed by a valid court-issued remand order and that administrative bail has been granted pending his fulfilment of the conditions.
“The EFCC has a lawful right to hold Otse in custody like any other suspect being investigated by the commission. The appropriate remand order was obtained in this regard,” he stated.
“He has been offered administrative bail and will regain his freedom upon meeting the bail conditions.”
The agency urged the public to refrain from speculation, asserting that investigations were ongoing and charges would be filed in due course if warranted.
“The EFCC should be allowed to do its job without fear or favour,” Oyewale concluded.
