Elon Musk Steps Down as Head of DOGE in Trump’s Administration Role

Must read

WASHINGTON, USA — Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has announced his resignation as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), ending a four-month tenure in President Donald Trump’s second administration.

The announcement came late on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, via a post on Musk’s X account, where he thanked Trump for the opportunity to serve and pledged that the work of the cost-cutting agency would continue.

Musk’s brief stint as the head of DOGE — an agency he helped conceptualise to root out wasteful government spending — has been marked by sweeping actions, including the downsizing of 11 federal agencies and layoffs affecting approximately 250,000 public sector workers.

According to the agency, those cuts have saved taxpayers $160 billion, well short of DOGE’s $2 trillion goal.

The billionaire entrepreneur’s departure immediately sparked speculation of a rift between Musk and Trump, especially following Musk’s public criticism of a major spending bill backed by the president.

On Tuesday, May 27, 2025, Trump had called the legislation a “Big Beautiful Bill”, touting it as a centrepiece of his administration’s fiscal strategy.

In contrast, Musk voiced concern that the bill “increases the deficit, not just decreases it, and undermines the work that the DOGE team is doing.”

“I think a bill can be big, or it can be beautiful, but I don’t know if it can be both, in my personal opinion,” Musk said during a virtual town hall.

However, a retweet from Musk’s account appeared to clarify the reason behind his resignation, stating that he had served as a Special Government Employee (SGE), a temporary role limited to 130 days by federal law.

“In the coming days, legacy media will try to convince you that President Trump and Elon Musk are no longer friends and that’s why Musk left,” the post read.

“What they won’t tell you is that Elon was a Special Government Employee, limited to 130 days of service and that term ends tomorrow.”

The White House has not yet issued an official response to Musk’s departure. Trump has made no public comment as of Thursday morning.

Musk and Trump have had a fluctuating relationship over the years.

While Musk was a vocal critic during Trump’s first term, their alliance grew closer in recent months, with Musk offering high-profile support during Trump’s 2024 campaign.

In a light-hearted moment earlier this year, Musk declared during an interview that he “loved Trump as much as a straight man can love another man.”

The DOGE project, once dismissed as a branding gimmick, has been a central part of Musk’s policy pitch to reduce federal inefficiency.

While the agency claims significant financial savings, recent data from a University of Pennsylvania budget model shows that federal spending has, in fact, increased compared to the same period last year.
