OBINGWA, Nigeria — The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Abia State chapter, has strongly condemned the alleged act of domestic violence and child abuse in which a man reportedly set his family ablaze in the early hours of Saturday, May 17, 2025, in Onicha Ngwa community of Obingwa Local Government Area.

The incident, described by FIDA as “horrific and a gross violation of human rights,” occurred between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m. when the suspect, 40-year-old Mr. Udochi Amala, allegedly set himself, his wife, Mrs. Amarachi Amala, and their three children on fire.

He reportedly accused his wife of infidelity, though later admitted he had no concrete evidence.

One of the couple’s daughters died from severe burns at the scene, while Udochi, who resides in Amapuihe village, Osisioma LGA, sustained injuries and was apprehended while attempting to flee.

In a disturbing statement attributed to him, Udochi was quoted as saying, “I have an issue with my wife, and I did not know that it would get to this extent. I am tired of this life.”

According to unconfirmed sources, Mrs. Amala and her two remaining children succumbed to their injuries on Monday, May 19, 2025, while receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.

The Police Public Relations Officer of the Abia State Command, DSP Maureen Chinaka, confirmed the incident and said investigations are ongoing.

In a statement issued Tuesday, May 20, 2025, FIDA Abia, through its Chairperson, Njideka Aniawonwa, and Secretary, Eberechukwu Kanu Oji, expressed outrage and demanded swift justice.

“We express our shock, outrage, and deep concern over this horrific act, which is a gross violation of human rights and dignity,” the statement read.

“We call for a full and transparent investigation and for the perpetrator to be held accountable under the law.”

The organisation also called on the government and civil society groups to provide immediate support for survivors of domestic abuse and to strengthen protection mechanisms for women and children in vulnerable communities.

“This incident underscores the urgent need to address the pervasive culture of silence around domestic violence,” FIDA said.

“We urge members of the public to report such cases and to join efforts aimed at protecting the rights and lives of women and children.”
