WASHINGTON, USA — Authorities in Washington are intensifying their search for 32-year-old Travis Decker, who is wanted on charges of first-degree murder and kidnapping after allegedly killing his three young daughters at a remote campground last week.
The victims — Paityn, 9; Evelyn, 8; and Olivia, 5 — were found dead on Monday, June 2, 2025, in a secluded area days after being reported missing.
According to police, the girls died from apparent suffocation.
Decker, described by law enforcement as an experienced outdoorsman with military training, is believed to be hiding in a remote, mountainous region of Washington, complicating efforts by local police, the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office, and federal authorities, including the FBI and U.S. Marshals Service.
“We believe he poses a significant risk, if approached,” the Wenatchee Police Department said in a statement.
Law enforcement officials have not released a possible motive.
The girls were reported missing by their mother on 30 May after Decker failed to return them following a scheduled visit.
He also stopped responding to phone calls.
Police later discovered his vehicle and mobile phone near the crime scene, but Decker had already fled.
“This was not the decision of a sound mind,” Chelan County Sheriff Mike Morrison said during a press conference on Wednesday, June 4, 2025.
“I don’t think any motive would be acceptable.”
Investigators believe Decker may have used his survivalist skills to pre-plan the escape.
“It sounds like at times he would go out and be off-grid for up to two and a half months,” Sheriff Morrison said, referencing conversations with Decker’s family.
Authorities suspect Decker may have cached supplies in the area ahead of time and is equipped to endure prolonged isolation.
“He has the knowledge to survive for a long period of time,” Morrison added.
In a public appeal to the fugitive, Sheriff Morrison pleaded for a peaceful surrender.
“Let’s wrap this up and do what’s right for your kids.”
The U.S. Marshals Service has announced a $20,000 reward for information leading to Decker’s capture.
The ongoing manhunt has prompted the closure of several national forest areas popular with hikers as law enforcement combs through challenging terrain.
Anyone with information is urged to contact law enforcement immediately and avoid approaching Decker.
Authorities continue to prioritise public safety as the search enters its second week.
