FG to Create Presidential Task Force on ‘Detty December’

Must read

ABUJA, Nigeria — The Federal Government has announced plans to set up a Presidential Task Force on “Detty December” to coordinate inter-agency efforts and position Nigeria as a leading global festive destination.

“Detty December” refers to the vibrant, month-long celebration that takes place across Nigeria each December, marked by concerts, cultural festivals, weddings, and parties that attract huge numbers of visitors, including members of the Nigerian diaspora returning home for the holidays.

Speaking to journalists after Thursday, November 6, 2025’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, the Minister of Arts, Culture, and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, said the initiative aims to enhance Nigeria’s global image, drive tourism revenue, and improve coordination among key sectors.

“This initiative will help Nigeria position itself as a global festive destination while strengthening inter-agency coordination,” Musawa said.

She explained that the task force will include representatives from critical Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) — such as aviation, interior, and power — to ensure smooth travel logistics, safety, and uninterrupted power supply during the high-traffic festive season.

In addition to the task force, the Federal Executive Council also approved the establishment of Tourism and Cultural Economic Zones across the six geopolitical zones and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The zones will serve as regional hubs for creative and cultural industries, attracting investment and promoting local heritage, festivals, and artisanal businesses.

Musawa further announced the adoption of “Naija Season”, a new national tourism brand developed by the National Council for Arts and Culture (NCAC).

The brand will showcase Nigeria’s rich array of festivals and cultural events throughout the year, beyond the December period.

According to the minister, the brand and the task force form part of President Tinubu’s broader plan to harness Nigeria’s creative economy as a major contributor to national GDP and job creation.

“With the adoption of Naija Season and the establishment of the Presidential Task Force on Detty December, we are creating a coordinated framework to make Nigeria’s cultural calendar one of the most vibrant in the world,” she added.

The government expects the initiative to boost tourism inflows, strengthen Nigeria’s soft power, and enhance the country’s standing as a premier festive and cultural destination in Africa.
