MAKURDI, Nigeria — Governor Hyacinth Alia has dissolved the Benue State Executive Council, ending the tenure of all serving commissioners in his administration.
The announcement was made in a statement issued by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, at the end of the 12th SEC meeting held in Makurdi on Wednesday, July 30, 2025.
Kula said the commissioners were directed to hand over to the permanent secretaries of their respective ministries without delay.
“The governor appreciates all members of the dissolved council for their dedication over the last two years,” the statement read.
“He urged those who may not be reappointed to remain loyal to the party and continue contributing to the development of the state.”
Governor Alia acknowledged the commissioners’ service and said that the dissolution was part of efforts to reinvigorate governance and allow other citizens the opportunity to serve.
In a related development, the governor approved the appointment of Mr. Moses Atagher, a seasoned legal practitioner, as the new Chief of Staff, replacing Mr. Paul Biam.
Atagher is a former two-term Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Benue State.
He also previously served as the acting Managing Director of the Federal Mortgage Bank, and is widely regarded as an experienced administrator with deep knowledge of public service.
Speaking on behalf of the dissolved cabinet, immediate past Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice and Public Order, Mr. Bemsen Mnyim, thanked Governor Alia for the opportunity to serve.
“At every stage in life, everywhere you are called to serve is a school,” Mnyim said. “We have learnt a lot while working with you.”
The cabinet shake-up comes as the Alia administration approaches its third year in office, signalling a possible policy reset ahead of the 2027 election cycle.
