MAGA, Nigeria — Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris has assured parents of the 25 schoolgirls abducted from the Government Girls Comprehensive Senior Secondary School in Maga that his administration is committed to securing their safe return.
Gunmen attacked the school in the early hours of Monday, November 17, 2025, killing Hassan Yakubu Makuku, the vice-principal, before abducting the pupils and escaping towards neighbouring Zamfara State.
A security guard, Ali Shehu, was also injured during the raid.
Idris visited the school on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, to assess the situation and meet families of the missing girls.
He described the attack as a devastating blow to the community and said the state government was working closely with security agencies to track the abductors.
“The unfortunate thing has already happened. They have abducted our children. We came here, we saw things for ourselves, and we met the parents whose children were taken,” he said.
“We gave them confidence, and we gave them our word that we will do everything possible to ensure that their children are rescued.”
He added that security operatives were intensifying efforts to locate the students.
“We also assured them to remain confident, and that security agencies will do everything necessary,” he said.
“That is the essence of our coming to Maga — to see the people and give them confidence and words of encouragement.”
The governor said his administration would continue to engage with security agencies, traditional rulers and local stakeholders until the girls are safely reunited with their families.
