Governor Umo Eno Hints at PDP Exit Again, Signals ‘Progressive’ Realignment

Must read

UYO, Nigeria — Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has once again suggested that his days in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may be numbered, giving his clearest signal yet of an impending political transition during a state banquet on Thursday, May 29, 2025, night to mark his second year in office.

While stopping short of a formal defection announcement, Eno used the occasion to speak fondly of the PDP but emphasised the need to “progressively move on” — a phrase that drew murmurs of anticipation from political watchers and guests at the event in Uyo.

“I respect our party, the PDP. I love the PDP. But we all know the way things are,” the governor said.

“So, whatever happens, wherever the journey of life takes me, I will always love you. We’ve built strong friendships, and we will always keep them.”

Governor Eno has recently drawn national attention for his growing alignment with key figures in the All Progressives Congress (APC), including President Bola Tinubu and Senate President Godswill Akpabio, fuelling speculation that a formal defection to the APC could be imminent ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“If you have anything to do, invite me—I will come. I will always be there. But it’s time to progressively move,” Eno continued.

“That again will not affect anything in this state. We do not govern based on political affiliations.”

While carefully avoiding naming the APC, his language mirrored previous statements hinting at political realignment, and his recent public gestures suggest he is laying the groundwork for a shift in allegiance.

Calling for unity across party lines, Eno added, “I would love to see all our party leaders seated together like this, across party lines. We must always put Akwa Ibom first. We know we have Akwa Ibomites in the PDP, APC, YPP, and IPAC. What matters most is that there is food, security, and welfare for our people. The ARISE Agenda provides for all these.”

Concluding his remarks, the governor delivered a message of reconciliation and state-first patriotism: “Whenever anyone flies into Akwa Ibom, please drop your party tag and know you are flying into a united Akwa Ibom.”
